PHILADELPHIA â âThirteen Miles from Paradise: John Moore,â which opens at the University of Pennsylvaniaâs Arthur Ross Gallery on April 11, is an exhibit of 16 industrial landscape paintings that focus on sites from Ohio to Pennsylvania, including Coatesville, Pa., an industrial town that has been an ongoing subject for the artist since his first painting there in 1986.
The townâs industry is the subject of his recent large-scale âworkscapes.â Based on recent visits and informed by an oral history from the areaâs current and former residents, these large-scale landscapes represent a deepened affinity for this industrial site and reflect the changes that have occurred there over the last 22 years.
Mooreâs paintings are exhibited widely in museums across the country, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Special events include an opening reception with a gallery talk given by the artist on April 8 at 4 p.m.
âThirteen Milesâ runs at the Arthur Ross Gallery, 220 S. 34th St., through June 14.
Arthur Ross Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and weekends noon-5 p.m. All exhibits are free and open to the public.
