PHILADELPHIA – Dr. Louis Schoenleber, Jr. (C’42, D’43), an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, World War II Navy Commander and oral surgeon, has left the majority of proceeds from his multi-million-dollar estate to Penn Dental Medicine’s Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The bequest, totaling $17.3 million, is the largest gift in the School’s history and one of the largest gifts ever to a U.S. dental school.
PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Pennsylvania today announced one of its smallest tuition increases in 42 years -– 3.8 percent -– while reaffirming its commitment to its innovative no-loan financial-aid program. Penn will expand its financial-aid budget for the coming year by $15 million, or 11 percent, to $149 million.
In 2009-2010, the number of aided undergraduates jumped by 10 percent, and aid expenditures have grown by 19 percent.
PHILADELPHIA –- The University of Pennsylvania will switch to Direct Lending for graduate and undergraduate students who wish to obtain federal loans for educational costs. The change will take effect with the first summer session for the 2010-11 academic year.
Currently, Penn students or their parents who take out loans rely on private lenders in the Federal Family Education Loan Program.
Shadowing Day, a city-wide program for 9th-grade students in the Philadelphia School District, coordinated by the Philadelphia Youth Network. The visiting students will spend the day learning about the host workplace, the kind of jobs the employees are doing and the education and experience needed to get such jobs.
The staff of the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania will host 18 students from Fitzsimons and West Philadelphia High schools.
PHILADELPHIA –- A two-week observance at the University of Pennsylvania of the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. begins with a Day of Service, Monday, Jan. 18, when volunteers will participate in activities that have become staples of this event: community-beautification projects, a food drive benefiting West Philadelphia’s People’s Emergency Center, the assembly of charitable gift packages and commemorative art projects.
PHILADELPHIA –- University of Pennsylvania senior Joshua Bennett of Yonkers, New York has won a prestigious United Kingdom Government Marshall Scholarship for graduate studies in the U.K. He is among 35 winners of the prestigious scholarship.
The University of Pennsylvania’s 17th annual Family Day, featuring a tailgate party, football game, special tours of the Penn Museum and ice skating at the Penn Ice Rink. The event is hosted by the Division of Human Resources, in association with Penn Athletics.
