PHILADELPHIA –- Michael R. Bloomberg, mayor of New York and founder of Bloomberg L.P., will deliver the address at the University of Pennsylvania's 252nd Commencement on Monday, May 19, at Franklin Field, 33rd and South streets. The procession of graduates begins at 9 a.m.

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Holds Canine Search Scenario at Penn Vet

WHAT:

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will hold a K-9 search training session in the basement of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine today.

The event is a demonstration for veterinary students and faculty, as well as a training session for explosive-detecting dogs. Seven dogs-in-training will run through a mock crime-scene scenario.

The Nanotechnology Institute Receives $3.5 Million to Foster Nanotechnology Research and Development

PHILADELPHIA –- The Nanotechnology Institute, or NTI, a consortium of Philadelphia-area research and technology organizations that includes the University of Pennsylvania, has received $3.5 million in funding from the commonwealth’s Pennsylvania Initiative for Nanotechnology.

Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell announced the award, which renews the Institute’s funding and positions Pennsylvania as a global leader in emerging technologies.

Heightened Weighing Discomfort Among Women May Increase Their Health Risks, Penn Study Indicates

PHILADELPHIA -– A new study from the University of Pennsylvania points to increased health risks for women owing to their higher level of discomfort about being weighed in public.
The study showed that college-age females, more than their male counterparts, experience high degrees of discomfort at the prospect of being weighed in the presence of others.

The study’s authors believe that some women may avoid necessary tests and treatments when a doctor visit includes a step on a public scale.

Bloomberg, now in his second term as mayor, is credited with reducing crime and creating jobs in the nation’s most populous city while embarking on a series of ambitious environmental and public-health initiatives.

Penn Nursing Students Partner With Local High School to Evaluate Elementary Students' Health

PHILADELPHIA –- Students at West Philadelphia’s Sayre High School who are taking a health-education class have been working with University of Pennsylvania nurse practitioner students and Penn School of Nursing faculty to learn accurate growth and diabetes-risk-factor assessment.

They are evaluating children in the Beacon after-school program at Sayre and providing nutrition education and a dance program designed to increase physical activity.
