Michael Bloomberg to Speak at Penn Commencement; Honorees Include Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust
PHILADELPHIA –- Michael R. Bloomberg, mayor of New York and founder of Bloomberg, L.P., will deliver the address at the University of Pennsylvania's 252nd Commencement on Monday, May 19.
Bloomberg, now in his second term as mayor, is credited with reducing crime and creating jobs in the nation’s most populous city while embarking on a series of ambitious environmental and public-health initiatives.

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Pennsylvania is one of three schools nationwide selected to receive the Presidential Award for General Community Service from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The others are Otterbein College in Ohio and the University of Colorado at Boulder.

PHILADELPHIA –- Students at West Philadelphia’s Sayre High School who are taking a health-education class have been working with University of Pennsylvania nurse practitioner students and Penn School of Nursing faculty to learn accurate growth and diabetes-risk-factor assessment.
They are evaluating children in the Beacon after-school program at Sayre and providing nutrition education and a dance program designed to increase physical activity.
Eric J. Furda, vice president for alumni relations and former executive director of undergraduate admissions at Columbia University, has been named dean of admissions at the University of Pennsylvania. Furda, a 1987 Penn graduate, will assume his position as dean on July 1, 2008.
Alumni Robert A. Fox and Penny Grossman Fox Give $10 Million to Endow Robert A. Fox Leadership Program
PHILADELPHIA -- Alumni Robert A. Fox and Penny Grossman Fox have made a gift of $10 million to endow and expand the Robert A. Fox Leadership Program in the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. The program, established in 1999 through an initial gift from the Foxes, combines coursework, events and service experiences to inspire and equip undergraduates to assume leadership roles in their future endeavors.
This most recent gift brings the Foxes’ total support of the program to more than $23 million.
PHILADELPHIA -- University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann has been named a co-chair of the transition team for Philadelphia Mayor-Elect Michael Nutter.
"I am very excited about the extraordinary talent and diverse experience of the individuals who have agreed to serve on my transition team," Nutter said. "These people have stepped forward to serve their city and will be helping us prepare as we build towards the beginning of my administration in January."
