“West Philadelphia: Building a Community” Exhibition to Open at Penn’s Arthur Ross Gallery


PHILADELPHIA — “West Philadelphia: Building a Community,” which opens at the University of Pennsylvania’s Arthur Ross Gallery on July 7, explores 19th-century architectural and urban development and features highlights of the community today.

The exhibit includes watercolors by Scottish immigrant David J. Kennedy that depict area houses, institutions and streets in 1836-1898. Land maps, photographs and postcards also reveal the neighborhood during these years.

Penn Students' Interviews, Research Fundamental to Development of Virtual West Philadelphia History Museum

PHILADELPHIA –- University of Pennsylvania students are playing a pivotal role in a virtual-history museum focusing on West Philadelphia.

Through an academically based community-service course at Penn, students have had the opportunity to be part of the West Philadelphia Community History Center, an interactive Web site that can grow as a collective portrait of the history, families and institutions of the area that is home to the Penn campus.

Google Tricycle Snaps Views From Philly Campus

Coming soon to a campus near you , the Google tricycle. A pedicab-like vehicle mounted with an 8-foot-high camera has been rolling around the pedestrian walkways of the University of Pennsylvania to collect panoramic images of the campus for Google Maps' Street View feature, which gives users detailed, street-level views of map locations over the Internet.

Karen Glanz Is Appointed Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor at University of Pennsylvania

PHILADELPHIA -- Karen Glanz, a globally influential public-health scholar, has been named the ninth Penn Integrates Knowledge University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

The appointment was announced today by Penn President Amy Gutmann and Interim Provost Vincent Price.

PennMOVES Sale to Benefit United Way Charities


The University of Pennsylvania’s second annual PennMOVES – (Move-Out Volunteers Engaging in Service)

This will be a sale of the items left behind by students during move out — clothes, furniture, kitchen gear, non-perishable food items —that would otherwise be destined for the landfill. These items have been collected and arranged by category and are available for purchase.

Penn Alexander School Sixth-Grader Vying for Title at National Spelling Bee in Washington

PHILADELPHIA — Sowsan Salaam, a 12-year-old sixth-grader from the University of Pennsylvania-assisted partnership school, Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander Elementary in West Philadelphia, is in Washington, D.C., today, competing against nearly 300 of the best spellers across the country at the Scripps National Spelling Bee this week.

Professor of Ethics and Preaching to Deliver Penn's Baccalaureate Address Sunday

PHILADELPHIA –- Kirk Byron Jones, professor of ethics and preaching at Andover Newton Theological School in Newton, Mass., will speak at the University of Pennsylvania’s 2009 Baccalaureate ceremonies on Sunday, May 17, in Irvine Auditorium, 3401 Spruce St.

Two ceremonies will be held, one at 1:30 p.m. for graduates whose last names begin with A through K and another at 3 p.m. for the L-Z graduates.
