Web Communications Group Meeting: 3-22-06
Meeting minutes
I. University Communications reminded the group that they will propose a
redesign of the central Penn web for fiscal year 2007
and
that
the
WCG may be used to discuss new technologies, such as RSS, shared digital
asset management systems, and content management systems.
II. Brief discussion on content management systems-
- The CMS working group plans to have an OmniUpdate demo
in the near future.
- A Macromedia representative will speak to the CMS working group
on April 24th to discuss their CMS product Contribute
3. The presentation
is open to all WCG members and will be held from 1:00 - 2:30 PM in the
Ann L. Roy Memorial Auditorium, Nursing Education Building
- Wharton's web team has opted against a
large-scale content management system because they have a lot of databases
that would be difficult to incorporate into a content management system.
In addition, there are only a small
number
of
Wharton staff members that would need access to a CMS.
- SEAS and EHRS (Environmental Health and Radiation Safety) are currently
using Contribute.
- UComms will post a spreadsheet online that contains CMS evaluation factors.
- The full group will continue its discussion of CMS at a future meeting.
III. RSS (stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary)
discussion-
- UComms provided a brief, non-technical explanation of RSS and how it
is used. Web-based news readers Rocket
RSS Reader and the personalized
Google home page were demonstrated for the group.
- The following colleges and universities use RSS news feeds and were shown
as examples:
- Knowledge at Wharton has
instituted an RSS feed in its site.
- Penn Library's web site has a page that includes a brief
description of RSS, including information about the tools and
software needed to use RSS.
- Alumni Relations is currently working on adding an RSS feed in the Did
you know? weekly
Penn facts section of their web site.
- The UComms web site now has its own RSS
feed page. UComms web team members are interested in starting a
discussion on how different RSS feeds throughout the University can be incorporated
into
the
central Penn web.
IV. The next WCG meeting will be a brainstorming session to discuss potential
enhancements to the central Penn web.
