East West South North
The Howard A. Silverstein and Patricia Bleznak Silverstein Abroad Studio in Photography
June 16, 2009
Dr. Gutmann visited the “East West South North” student photo exhibit in the Charles Addams Fine Art Gallery. The exhibit is the culmination of Fine Arts 515: The Howard A. Silverstein and Patricia Bleznak Silverstein Abroad Studio in Photography: China, an innovative course taught by Gabriel Martinez during the spring semester 2009.
Through the course, twelve PennDesign Fine Arts Photography students were selected to be part of this inaugural travel studio which took them abroad to Beijing, March 6-21, 2009. First and second year MFA students, as well as undergraduate upper level Fine Arts Majors and Minors concentrating in photography were eligible. In order to be considered for the course, interested students had to submit an application and portfolio of their past work demonstrating superior competence in the medium. Through photography, this travel abroad opportunity explored the contradictions and significance of China’s radically shifting contemporary cultural climate.
