![]() Penn President Amy Gutmann and Shirley Franklin. Shirley Franklin, G’69, is the mayor of Atlanta. Since 1978, when then Mayor Maynard Jackson appointed her the city’s Commissioner of Cultural Affairs, Shirley Franklin has been a key player in the City of Atlanta. Her public service career continued with further appointments such as the first female City Manager and then Executive Officer for Operations before being elected as the first African-American to serve as Mayor of a major Southern city in 2000. In her second term now, Mayor Franklin was recently named by Time Magazine as one of the “Five Best Big-City Mayors” in America. |
