Certification Courses

We offer a range of certifications to meet the needs of the Penn Community. For questions regarding any Aquatics Programming please contact Katie Gold.

  • Lifeguard Certification  

    The Lifeguard Certification Course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies, breathing and cardiac emergencies, and sudden illnesses and injuries until EMS or other trained responders take over. All participants must be at least 15 years of age by date of last class session.  All participants must be able to pass the pre-course prerequisites which consist of a continuous 300 yard swim (goggles permitted), treading water for 2 minutes using only legs, and performing a timed deep water brick retrieval (goggles not permitted).  These classes are open to individuals not affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania. Registration is now open!!!

    TO REGISTER ONLINE: Call or email the Membership Office, 215-898-6100, to obtain the registration link in addition to the required login & pin number.

    TO REGISTER IN PERSON: Stop by the Membership Services Office in Pottruck Health & Fitness Center.

    Membership Services is open 9a-5:30p M-TH and 9a to 5p F. You can also email pennrec@pobox.upenn.edu.

    Students must attend every class session for each course, missing one or more class sessions will result in an incomplete with no money refunded. If there is an extenuating circumstance, the instructors may be flexible with make-up time/course work, but this should be communicated to the instructors well in advance of both sign-up and the start of the course.

    Members: $275

    Refunds will not be given to students who cannot pass the class.

  • Lifeguard Review  

    This course is aimed towards lifeguards whose certifications are about to expire. Participants taking this class will be expected to have full knowledge of in-water skills, CPR/AED, First Aid, and all other criteria covered in full certification classes. All participants must be able to pass the pre-course prerequisites which consist of a continuous 300 yard swim (goggles permitted), treading water for 2 minutes using only legs, and performing a timed deep water brick retrieval (goggles not permitted).  All in water skills and written tests must also be passed in order to achieve re-certification. These classes are open to individuals not affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania. Registration is now open!

  • Scuba Certification 

    SCUBA is BACK! 
    Registration for the Spring 2016 class opens on 3/11.  Registration closes at 5pm on 4/1. Register at the Membership Office in Pottruck Health & Fitness Center.

    If you’ve always wanted to take scuba diving lessons, experience unparalleled adventure and see the world beneath the waves, this is where it starts. Get your scuba diving certification with the PADI Open Water Diver course – the world’s most popular and widely recognized scuba course. The course consists of three sections: Academics, Confined Water and Open Water Certification Dives. You will complete the first two sections of the course here with the instructional team.  Upon completion of this weekend course, you will be eligible to complete your certification dives anywhere in the world.

    Included in this course are :

    PADI Open Water Diver Course

    1. Academic Section

    Academic Materials – Student Manual, Log Book, Access to Learning Videos

    2. Confined Water Section

    All life support equipment provided during class – Regulator, BCD, Cylinders

    Mask, Fins, Snorkel set – students keep this gear.

    Students passing the requirements will be prepared and eligible to complete their open water dives to receive certification as PADI Open Water divers.

    Cost: $460/members; $475/non-members; $500/community, Price includes:  pool and academic instruction, dive manual, log book, mask, fins, snorkel.  The class must have a minimum of 4 people enrolled to take place.
    A Pre-Course Orientation Session is Required.

    NOTE: Participation in this course does not guarantee successful completion. Students passing the requirements will be prepared and eligible to complete their open water dives to receive certification as PADI Open Water divers. Refunds will not be issued for students who cannot meet course requirements in the time allotted. Non-passing students will be responsible for retaking this or another course to facilitate their SCUBA certification.

Registration Information

A Penn Affiliation is required to enroll in our Scuba Certification Course and an active PennCard is required a the time of registration. Registration can be done online or through the Membership Services Office. For assistance with registration please call 215-898-6100.

Refund Policy 

If PennRec cancels a course, participants will be offered the choice of transferring to another course or receive a full refund. If a participant chooses not to take a class that is not cancelled, the participant is not eligible for a refund.
