  • Lifeguard Certification

Participants are welcome to sign up for the Campus Recreation Lifeguard Training program. To be enrolled in this course students must be at least 15 years old, be able to swim 300 yards continuously and retrieve a 10 pound brick from 14 feet of water. The course will run 5 weeks, be a total of 31 mandated hours, and consist of both classroom and pool instruction. The purpose of the LG Training course is to provide entry level participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services arrive.

Students must attend every class within the course, missing 1 class (or more) will result in an incomplete with no money refunded. If there is an extenuating circumstance the instructors may be flexible with make-up time/course work, but this should be communicated to the instructors well in advance of both sign-up and the start of the course.

A re-certification course will be offered to participants who have either previously been a lifeguard, or whose certification has just run out. Students of this course are expected to have intimate and working knowledge of all in-water skills and academic concepts.

Upon successful completion of either course, each participant will receive two American Red Cross certificates: one for Lifeguarding/First Aid, and another for CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Both certifications are valid for 2 years.

Academic Course Review information can be found here.

The cost of the full class will be $300 for members/students, $325 for non-members, and $125/$150 for re-certifications only. The class must have a minimum of 4 people enrolled to take place and there may be a mandatory orientation, if deemed necessary by the instructors, however this will be communicated to the class in advance.
