PennRec’s Intramural Program offers a wide range of sports leagues, tournaments and special events for students, faculty, and staff of the University of Pennsylvania. Intramural Sports has something for everyone, from the experienced athlete to those looking to try a new sport. Our goal is to provide fun, safe, and competitive sports programming that appeals to all levels of athletes. Beyond competition, participation in PennRec’s Intramural Sports Program is a value-added experience that has the ability to foster personal growth, leadership, and lasting friendships.

  • What is Intramurals?

    Intramurals is a level of competition offered by most colleges and universities. It is where students, faculty, and staff can form teams in various sports and compete against one another internally. Some intramural sports offer an opportunity to play other schools which are referred to as Extramurals. Penn belongs to City 6 where they compete against other schools in Philadelphia. Penn also belongs to the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) which organizes several extramural and intramural events.

  • What is CITY 6?

    City 6 is composed of Drexel University, LaSalle University, Saint Joseph’s University, Temple University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Villanova University. Tournaments are held at venues throughout the area, includingsome of the best collegiate facilities in the city such as the Palestra, Villanova Football Stadium and Saint Joseph’s Alumni Hall. City 6 Championships are organized for flag football, volleyball, basketball, and softball.

  • What sports are offered at Penn and when?

    Penn offers several team-sport seasons and tournaments in the fall and spring semesters. In the fall semester we offer flag football, singles tennis, ultimate Frisbee, men’s and women’s volleyball, and co-rec softball. In the spring semester there is basketball, doubles tennis, men’s and women’s softball, co-rec volleyball and soccer. Visit IMLeagues for the upcoming season’s sports and schedules.

  • How do I register a team?

    To register a team, you can download the registration document via the forms directory and follow the directions on IMleagues for registration.

  • What is the Captain’s Agreement?

    The Captain’s Agreement outlines the responsibilities and duties that the Department of Recreation expects Intramural team captains to fulfill and perform. Adherence to these guidelines will help make your intramural experience fun and rewarding. The captain’s agreement must be completed by every team captain before the start of the season and can found in the forms directory.

  • On which days are games played?

    Intramural games are typically played Monday through Thursday starting around 7:00 PM. All games, locations, and start times will be posted on IMLeagues and will be available at all times to those who have an IMLeagues account.

  • Where are the games held?

    Games are typically held in Penn Park, the David Pottruck Health & Fitness Center, the Ringe Squash Courts, The Palestra, and Franklin Field.  Locations of the games are posted on IMLeagues. If you are unfamiliar with these facilities a campus map can be downloaded here.

  • When does registration begin?

    You can find out the times to register your team by downloading the Schedule of Events PDF via the forms directory. The registration dates can also be found on IMLeagues beside each activity offering.

  • If I don’t have a team, can I sign up as a free agent?

    Yes! If you are a single player, or a group of players who want to participate but do not have a full team, you can sign up as a free agent on IMLeagues. Captains of other teams will then be able to contact you for their team. If enough free agents sign up, a “Free Agent” team may be constructed as its own team.

  • Can I play on more than one team?

    You may participate in one single gender and one co-rec league per sport.

  • What is the performance bond?

    A performance bond is a $100 deposit required from each team that participates in intramural sports.This bond is not deposited if a team has satisfactorily met the conditions of the captain’s agreement.
