Outdoor Adventure Trips

Trips will run in all weather conditions with the exception of dangerous conditions. Ending times of trips are approximated for your convenience, but please expect that times may vary due to traffic or unexpected delays. All trips will promptly begin at the climbing wall at the Pottruck Health & Fitness Center. Remember that wilderness trips take place away from modern amenities such as bathrooms, heaters, and grocery stores. Please plan accordingly.

  • Outdoor Climbing 

    IMG_2155Whether you have never climbed before or you are an avid climber just looking to get outside, our outdoor climbing courses are for you.  We will be visiting some of the Philly areas best  local climbing destinations.  No experience is required and all necessary equipment is provided.  All courses are taught by an American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Instructor.


    Intro to Outdoor Rock Climbing – Ralph Stover State Park

    June 4th – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $50 Member / $60 Non-Member

    Spring is here and it is time to leave the gym and start climbing outside.   Whether you have never climbed before or you are an avid climber just looking to get outside, this course is for you.  We will be visiting some of the Philly areas best  local climbing destinations.  No experience is required and all necessary equipment is provided.

    Adirondack Backpacking & Rock Climbing Extended Trip – Adirondack Mountains, New York

    August 8th – Monday to August 13th – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 6 Days 7:00am Monday to 8:00pm Saturday

    Cost: $ 350 Member / $400 Non-Member

    Spend a week exploring the beautiful Adirondack Mountains in New York.  The trip will leave on Monday 8/8 and return on Saturday 8/13.  We will spend the week backpacking through the high peaks wilderness, rock climbing on some of the area’s iconic cliffs, and even spend some time exploring the olympic town of Lake Placid.  Transportation and all necessary equipment is provided.  A mandatory pre-trip meeting on Thursday 7/28 is necessary to participate on the trip

  • Hiking and Backpacking

    IMG_2177Day hikes stroll down lazy hills, along rivers, lakes, and swamps, scale steep ridges to gain gorgeous views of the valley below. Multi-day backpacking trips are designed to develop self-reliance in the participants; to keep you out of the school of hard knocks. Trips run on a wide range of trails including Appalachian Mountain trails.



    Beach Day Hike – Cape May Point, New Jersey

    June 18th – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $ 35 Member / $45 Non-Member

    Enjoy a day of beach hiking for this adventure.  We will be hiking through Cape May Point along the New Jersey shore which contains a variety of coastal habitats including, forests, marshes, dunes and the New Jersey beach.   This trip is suited for all hiking abilities.  Transportation will be provided.


    Full Moon Night Hike

    June 20th – Monday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00pm to 11:00pm

    Cost: $ 25 Member / $35 Non-Member

    Come howl at the moon as we explore the beauty of hiking at night.  The full moon night hike will visit local hiking destinations and offer spectacular views of the night sky.  No experience is necessary and headlamps are provided.


    Hiking & Paddling Weekend – Trapp Pond State Park, DE

    July 15th – Friday to July 17th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 3 Day 5:00pm Friday to 6:00pm Sunday

    Cost: $ 150 Member / $175 Non-Member

    Spend the weekend on the water with this overnight trip that combines hiking, camping, and canoeing at one of Delaware’s best natural gems.  Enjoy the weekend at Trapp Pond state park where we will be camping for 2 nights.  On Saturday we will be canoeing through the scenic cypress swamps of Trap Pond.  On Sunday, we will take a casual hike along the shores of the pond before returning to campus.  This is sure to be an action-packed weekend.  Travel, canoe rentals, campsite rental, camping equipment, professional instruction, and guides included.  Must be able to swim to participate.

    Waterfall Day Hike – Ricketts Glen State Park

    July 24th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $ 35 Member / $45 Non-Member

    Hike one of the most beautiful locations in Pennsylvania.  We will be traveling to Ricketts Glen State Park in North Central, PA, which boasts 22 waterfalls, including the 94 foot high Ganoga Falls.  This trip is suited for hikers of all abilities.


    Backpacking Weekend – Catskill Mountains, New York

    July 29th – Friday to July 31st – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 3 Day 5:00pm Friday to 6:00pm Sunday

    Cost: $ 100 Member / $125 Non-Member

    Take a weekend hike through the beautiful and historic Catskill Mountains.  We will spend 2 day and 2 nights backing in the Catskill Park in Upstate New York.  Find out why authors, artists, and musicians found inspiration in these mountains.   No experience is necessary.  All necessary equipment and a meal on Saturday night will be provided.  A mandatory pre-trip meeting on Monday 7/25  is scheduled to discuss the details and logistics of the trip.

  • Paddle Sports 

    IMG_2210Take your adventure off shore with our water-based paddle sports.  Join us for a variety of paddle sports, whether you prefer Stand Up Paddleboarding at the beach, canoeing or kayaking down a lazy stream, or challenging the rapids on a white water rafting trip, we have something for everyone.  Participants must be able to swim in order to register.

     


    Stand Up Paddle Boarding – Delaware Waterways

    June 19th – Saturday 

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $75 Member / $85 Non-Member

    Head to the Delaware coast for some sun and water while learning how to Stand Up Paddle Board.  Professional guides will teach an introduction to paddle boarding lesson, followed by a relaxing paddle around Cape Henlopen bay along the Atlantic ocean.  No experience necessary.  Transportation and all equipment is provided.


    Whitewater Rafting – Lehigh Gorge

    June 26th – Sunday 

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $85 Member / $100 Non-Member

    Prepare to get wet as we will be rafting down the Lehigh Gorge on a dam release day that will ensure the best rafting of the year as we will see up to Class III rapids.  We will be spending 3-5 hours on the river and each trip will be lead by guides from Whitewater Challengers.  You must be able to swim to participate on this trip as there is a high possibility that your raft will flip.  No experience necessary.


    Kayaking Overnight – New Jersey Pine Barrens

    July 9th – Saturday to July 10th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 2 Day 8:00am Saturday to 6:00pm Sunday

    Cost: $ 150 Member / $175 Non-Member

    Enjoy a weekend paddling down a lazy stream through one of the most beautiful areas of New Jersey.  We will be kayaking for 2 days down the Mullica River in the NJ Pine Barrens.  On Saturday night we will be stopping to do some streamside camping.  This is a great course for all abilities.  Travel, instruction, boat rental, and guides will be provide.  No experience necessary.  Participants must be able to swim.

    Trip Logistics

  • Biking

    Choose pedal power for your next adventure with one of our biking trips.  We offer a variety of biking, from leisurely touring to hopping over roots and rocks on the trails with a mountain bike.  Biking is a great way to cover a lot of distance and see more in a short amount of time.  We rent bicycles from the destinations that we travel to.  Sorry, but you can’t bring your own trustee bike, as we do not have a way to transport it.

    Trip Logistics

  • Snow Sports

    PennRec StaffWhether you’re learning the slopes, or are a seasoned veteran, join us for a wintry experience on our Downhill Ski/Snowboard trips. Local trips ski at the various resorts in the Pocono Mountains. Opportunities are available for long weekend trips further into the northeast. The destinations we select offer a challenge for any level ski/snowboarder: from green to black diamond.

    • Meet at the Pottruck Health and Fitness Center for all trips.
    • All participants will receive a pre-trip email.
  • Extended Trips

    Take an Adventure for your academic break.  The Outdoor Adventure program offers a variety of adventures during Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter breaks.  Trips range from 4 to 7 days long and usually require extended travel time.  The extended trips visit some of most scenic outdoor locations regionally and nationally and may encompass several activity areas during one trip.  Interest and/or pre-trip meetings are typically required to participate in an extended trip.

    Trip Logistics

  • Cancellation & Refund Policies 

    Penn Campus Recreation reserves the right to cancel any Outdoor Adventure trip due to weather, safety issues, or low enrollment.  Participants will receive notice of cancellation at least 24 hours before the adventure is due to depart.  In the event of a Penn Recreation cancellation, participants will receive a full refund of any fees paid.

    Day Trips

    If a participant withdraws from a day trip prior to 48 hours of the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  No refunds will be given if participant withdraws within 48 hours of the trip departure.

    Weekend Trips (2-3 days)

    If a participant withdraws from a weekend trip prior to 7 days before the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  A 50% refund of any fees paid will be given if withdraw occurs within 7-2 days prior to the trip departure.  No refunds will be given if withdraw occurs within 48 hours of the trip departure.

    Extended Trips (Longer than 3 days)

    If a participant withdraws from an extended trip prior to 14 days before the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  A 50% refund of any fees paid will be given if withdraw occurs within 14-7 days prior to the trip departure.  No refunds will be given if withdraw occurs within 7 days of trip departure.
