Outdoor Adventure Trips

Trips will run in all weather conditions with the exception of dangerous conditions. Ending times of trips are approximated for your convenience, but please expect that times may vary due to traffic or unexpected delays. All trips will promptly begin at the climbing wall at the Pottruck Health & Fitness Center. Remember that wilderness trips take place away from modern amenities such as bathrooms, heaters, and grocery stores. Please plan accordingly.

  • Outdoor Climbing 

    IMG_2155Whether you have never climbed before or you are an avid climber just looking to get outside, our outdoor climbing courses are for you.  We will be visiting some of the Philly areas best  local climbing destinations.  No experience is required and all necessary equipment is provided.  All courses are taught by an American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Instructor.


    Climbing & Hiking Weekend

    Trip Length: 3 Days – Friday, September 18th @ 5 PM – Sunday, September 20th 8 PM

    Spend the weekend rock climbing and hiking with this multi-sport adventure.  We will be traveling to the Michaux State Forest in Pennsylvania on Friday 9/18 where we will be spending the weekend in a primitive cabin at the base of Shaeffer’s Rocks.  From the cabin front door, we will only be steps away from scaling the cliffs of Shaeffer’s Rock on Saturday and then day hiking a section of the Appalachian Trail to Buzzards Peak on Sunday.  No experience is necessary.  All necessary climbing and camping equipment will be provided.  Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

    Price: $100 for Members & $125 for Non-members


    Intro to Outdoor Rock Climbing – Birdsboro Quarry

    Trip Length: 1 Day – Sunday, October 4th @ 8 AM – 6 PM

    Fall is undoubtedly the best time to go climbing outdoors.   Whether you have never climbed before or you are an avid climber just looking to get outside, this course is for you.  We will be visiting some of the Philly areas best  local climbing destinations.  No experience is required and all necessary equipment is provided.  Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

    Price: $40 for Members & $50 for Non-members


    Intro to Outdoor Rock Climbing – Safe Harbor

    Trip Length: 1 Day – Sunday, November 8th @ 8 AM – 6 PM

    Fall is undoubtedly the best time to go climbing outdoors.   Whether you have never climbed before or you are an avid climber just looking to get outside, this course is for you.  We will be visiting some of the Philly areas best  local climbing destinations.  No experience is required and all necessary equipment is provided.  Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

  • Hiking and Backpacking

    IMG_2177Day hikes stroll down lazy hills, along rivers, lakes, and swamps, scale steep ridges to gain gorgeous views of the valley below. Multi-day backpacking trips are designed to develop self-reliance in the participants; to keep you out of the school of hard knocks. Trips run on a wide range of trails including Appalachian Mountain trails.

     


    Day Hike to Nockamixon State Park

    Trip Length: 1 Day – Sunday, September 13th @ 8 AM – 6 PM

    Get out of the city and into the wilderness with this adventure located within an hour of Philly.  We will take a leisurely hike that encounters various forest types including stands of large trees and views of Lake Nockamixon.  This trip is suited for hikers of all abilities. . Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

    Price: $25 for Members & $35 for Non-members


    Full Moon Night Hike #1

    Trip Length: 1 Day – Tuesday, September 29th @ 6 PM – 11 PM

    Come howl at the moon as we explore the beauty of hiking at night.  The full moon night hike will visit local hiking destinations and offer spectacular views of the night sky.  No experience is necessary and headlamps are provided.  Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

    Price: $15 for Members & $25 for Non-members


    Fall Break Backpacking the Dolly Sods Wilderness, WV

    Trip Length: 4 Days – Thursday, October 8th @ 8 AM – Sunday, October 11th @ 8 PM

    Spend your Fall Break with us as we visit the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area in wild and wonderful West Virginia.  We will spend 4 days and 3 nights backpacking through the beautiful landscape of the Dolly Sods with its unique forest types and beautiful views.  The trip will leave on Thursday 10/8 and return on Sunday 10/11.   No Experience is required.  All necessary equipment is provided.  A mandatory pre-trip meeting on Monday 10/5 is necessary to participate on the hike.     Price: $150 for Members & $175 for Non-members


    Day Hike to Hawk Mountain

    Trip Length: 1 Day – Sunday, October 18th @ 8 AM – 6 PM

    Fall is a great time of year for hiking and bird watching.  This trip combines both in one great location.  We will be hiking on the property of the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, which offers great hiking with beautiful views and several locations to watch the Fall raptor migration.  We will start the hike at the Hawk Mountain visitors center with a chance to see some birds of prey up close and personal before going on our hike.  We will hike to one of the prominent over looks on Hawk Mountain that offers expansive views of the valley below and presents opportunities to see several species of raptors fly directly over head while they are migrating through the area.    This trip is suited for hikers of all abilities.  Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

    Price: $35 for Members & $45 for Non-members


    Backpacking the Appalachian Trail

    Trip Length: 3 Days – Friday, October 23rd @ 5 PM – Sunday, October 25th 8 PM

    Take a “Walk in the Woods” on a section of the world renown Appalachian Trail.  We will be hiking a section of the trail in Southern Pennsylvania in the Michaux State Forest.  The trip will leave on Friday 10/23 and return on Sunday 10/25.  The October temperatures and changing of the leaves makes this a perfect time to hike the trail.  Parts of the hike will be strenuous at times.  No Experience is necessary.  All necessary equipment, transportation and a meal on Saturday night is provided.  A mandatory pre-trip meeting on Monday 10/19 is required to participate on the hike.  Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

    Trip Length: 1 Day – Monday, October 26th @ 6 PM – 11 PM

    Halloween Day Hike on the Shades of Death Trail

    Trip Length: 1 Day – Saturday, October 31st @ 8 AM – 6 PM

    With a name like the “Shades of Death Trail”, we thought it would only be apropriate to hike this trail on Halloween.  Dress in your scariest Halloween costume to make it even more fitting.  This hike takes place in Hickory Run State Park in the Pocono Mountains.  Parts of the trail will be physically demanding, but can be accomplished by hikers of all abilities.   No experience necessary.  Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

  • Paddle Sports 

    IMG_2210Take your adventure off shore with our water-based paddle sports.  Join us for a variety of paddle sports, whether you prefer Stand Up Paddleboarding at the beach, canoeing or kayaking down a lazy stream, or challenging the rapids on a white water rafting trip, we have something for everyone.  Participants must be able to swim in order to register.


    Whitewater Rafting the Lehigh Gorge #1 (Registration Full)

    Trip Length: 1 Day – Saturday, September 5th  @ 9 AM –  6 PM

    Spend Labor Day Weekend taking on the rapids of the Lehigh River.  We will be offering 2 separate rafting trips, 1 on Saturday 9/5 and 1 on Sunday 9/6.  Prepare to get wet as we will be rafting down the Lehigh Gorge on a dam release day that will ensure the best rafting of the year as we will see up to Class III rapids.  We will be spending 3-5 hours on the river and each trip will be lead by guides from Whitewater Challengers.  You must be able to swim to participate on this trip as there is a high possbility that your raft will flip.  No experience necessary. Rafting is an inherently dangerous activity with risks involved.  Click here to learn more about the risks and how the outfitter, “Whitewater Challengers” manages those risks.  Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

    Price: $75 Members & $100 Non-members

  • Biking

    Choose pedal power for your next adventure with one of our biking trips.  We offer a variety of biking, from leisurely touring to hopping over roots and rocks on the trails with a mountain bike.  Biking is a great way to cover a lot of distance and see more in a short amount of time.  We rent bicycles from the destinations that we travel to.  Sorry, but you can’t bring your own trustee bike, as we do not have a way to transport it.

     


    Biking the Lehigh Gorge

    Trip Length: 1 Day – Saturday, October 3rd @ 8 AM – 6 PM

    Take a leisurely bike ride through one of the most beautiful places in Eastern Pennsylvania.  We will be riding bicycles approximately 25 miles through the Lehigh Gorge in the Pocono Mountains.  This bike ride travels along the Lehigh River on an abandoned rail road grade.  The views will be spectacular as this will be the prime time to view the leaves in their fall foliage.  No experience necessary.  Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

  • Snow Sports

    PennRec StaffWhether you’re learning the slopes, or are a seasoned veteran, join us for a wintry experience on our Downhill Ski/Snowboard trips. Local trips ski at the various resorts in the Pocono Mountains. Opportunities are available for long weekend trips further into the northeast. The destinations we select offer a challenge for any level ski/snowboarder: from green to black diamond.

    Trip Logistics

  • Cancellation & Refund Policies 

    Penn Campus Recreation reserves the right to cancel any Outdoor Adventure trip due to weather, safety issues, or low enrollment.  Participants will receive notice of cancellation at least 24 hours before the adventure is due to depart.  In the event of a Penn Recreation cancellation, participants will receive a full refund of any fees paid.

    Day Trips

    If a participant withdraws from a day trip prior to 48 hours of the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  No refunds will be given if participant withdraws within 48 hours of the trip departure.

    Weekend Trips (2-3 days)

    If a participant withdraws from a weekend trip prior to 7 days before the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  A 50% refund of any fees paid will be given if withdraw occurs within 7-2 days prior to the trip departure.  No refunds will be given if withdraw occurs within 48 hours of the trip departure.

    Extended Trips (Longer than 3 days)

    If a participant withdraws from an extended trip prior to 14 days before the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  A 50% refund of any fees paid will be given if withdraw occurs within 14-7 days prior to the trip departure.  No refunds will be given if withdraw occurs within 7 days of trip departure.
