Outdoor Adventure Trips

Get out of the city and into nature with one of our Outdoor Adventures!  Studies have shown that spending time in the outdoors has significant physical health benefits, helps reduce stress, decreases anxiety, increases self-confidence and sharpens one’s focus.  Our trips are suited for all ability levels and are led by trained staff.  Transportation and all necessary equipment is provided for all trips.

Penn Outdoor Adventure trips will run in all weather conditions with the exception of dangerous conditions. Ending times of trips are approximated for your convenience, but please expect that times may vary due to traffic or unexpected delays. All trips will promptly begin at the climbing wall at the Pottruck Health & Fitness Center. Remember that wilderness trips take place away from modern amenities such as bathrooms, heaters, and grocery stores. Please plan accordingly.

  • Outdoor Climbing 

    IMG_2155Whether you have never climbed before or you are an avid climber just looking to get outside, our outdoor climbing courses are for you.  We will be visiting some of the Philly areas best  local climbing destinations.  No experience is required and all necessary equipment is provided.  All courses are taught by an American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Instructor.


    Rock Climbing @ Safe Harbor March 24th – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member / $60 Non-Member

    Located along the banks of the Susquehanna River, the cliffs of Safe Harbor offer great climbing for all abilities. This man-made crag gives climbers an introduction into slab climbing, which rewards those with good footwork and balance. Safe Harbor’s riverside location often stays warm when the weather turns cool and is a great place to spot bald eagles. Price includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment and instruction.

    Rock Climbing @ Ralph Stover

    April 8th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Overlooking Tohickon Creek is the “High Rocks” portion of Ralph Stover State Park. Challenge yourself on the cliffs that reach 80ft in height. Climbers of all abilities can enjoy this local gem. Price includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment and instruction.

    Michaux Multi-Adventure Weekend

    April 13th to April 15th

    Trip Duration: 3 Days Friday 4/13 @ 5:00pm – Sunday 4/15 @ 6:00pm

    Cost: $125 Pottruck Member / $150 Non-Member

    Hike, paddle and climb on this weekend adventure in the Appalachian mountains of Southern Pennsylvania. We will be exploring the Michaux State Forest by hiking along a portion of the Appalachian Trail, Pack Rafting in a beautiful mountain lake and rock climbing at Schaefer’s Rocks. Spend two nights in a rustic cabin in the middle of the forest. Price includes: Transportation, lodging, all necessary equipment and instruction.

  • Hiking and Backpacking

    IMG_2177Day hikes stroll down lazy hills, along rivers, lakes, and swamps, scale steep ridges to gain gorgeous views of the valley below. Multi-day backpacking trips are designed to develop self-reliance in the participants; to keep you out of the school of hard knocks. Trips run on a wide range of trails including Appalachian Mountain trails.


    Snowshoeing @ French CreekFebruary 18th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $40 Pottruck Member / $50 Non-Member

    Just outside of the Philly suburbs lies French Creek State Park. Hike the wooded trails that the famous frontiersman, Daniel Boone, once roamed growing-up. Enjoy with streams, woods, and lakes that make up the landscape of the state park. Price Includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment, and instruction.

    Morris Arboretum Hike

    March 25th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 10:00am to 3:00pm

    Cost: $10 Pottruck Member & Non-Member

    Explore the beautiful gardens and grounds of the Morris Arboretum operated by the University of Pennsylvania. Located at the Northern edge of the city limits, the Morris Arboretum hosts paved trails for walking, green houses with various plant species, sculptures and educational exhibits. This hike includes a guided tour by one of the arboretum’s staff. ***Note: If you do not possess a Penn ID Card, there will be an additional $17 entrance fee***

    Full Moon Night Hike @ Wissahickon

    March 29th – Thursday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 7:00pm to 10:30pm

    Cost: $25 Pottruck Member & 35 Non-Member

    Come howl at the moon as we explore the beauty of hiking at night. The full moon night hike will visit local hiking destinations and offer spectacular views of the night sky. No experience is necessary and headlamps are provided.

    Day Hike @ Nockamixon

    April 7th – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $35 Pottruck Member / $45 Non-Member

    Nockamixon State Park lies just North of Philadelphia. The park contains miles of hiking trails through the rolling woodlands that surround Lake Nockamixon. This trip will hike approximately 5 miles on easy terrain with several lake-side views.

    Day Hike @ Glen Onoko Falls

    April 22nd – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $35 Pottruck Member / $45 Non-Member

    Within the Lehigh Gorge State Park lies Glen Onoko Falls. This beautiful hike starts along the Lehigh River and travels up the hillside of the Lehigh Gorge passing several waterfalls until you reach Glen Onoko Falls, a gorgeous 60ft mountainside waterfall. The hike up to the falls can be strenuous at times, but the water falls make for a nice reward.

    May 17th to May 20th 2018

    Start your summer off with a backpacking trip to the beautiful mountains of North Carolina! Join us as we spend 4 days and 3 nights backpacking, camping, and hiking through the Linville Gorge Wilderness in the Pisgah National Forest. No experience required. All necessary equipment, transportation, guiding, instruction and a portion of meals will be provided.

  • Paddle Sports 

    IMG_2210Take your adventure off shore with our water-based paddle sports.  Join us for a variety of paddle sports, whether you prefer Stand Up Paddleboarding at the beach, canoeing or kayaking down a lazy stream, or challenging the rapids on a whitewater rafting trip, we have something for everyone.  Participants must be able to swim in order to register.

    April 21st – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Enjoy paddling along the Pennsylvania/New Jersey border, down the Delaware River, through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The Delaware Water Gap is a beautiful section of river with spectacular sites and wildlife viewing opportunities. Price Includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment, and instruction.

    Pack Rafting @ Batsto Lake

    April 27th – Friday (Reading Days)

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 9:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member / $60 Non-Member

    Take a break from studying during Reading Days and relax on the water of Batsto Lake, located in the beautiful New Jersey Pine Barrens. Explore the lake and upstream marsh lands in this picturesque setting. Price Includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment, and instruction.

  • Biking

    Choose pedal power for your next adventure with one of our biking trips.  We offer a variety of biking, from leisurely touring to hopping over roots and rocks on the trails with a mountain bike.  Biking is a great way to cover a lot of distance and see more in a short amount of time.  We rent bicycles from the destinations that we travel to.  Sorry, but you can’t bring your own trustee bike, as we do not have a way to transport it.

  • Snow Sports

    PennRec StaffWhether you’re learning the slopes, or are a seasoned veteran, join us for a wintry experience on our Downhill Ski/Snowboard trips. Local trips ski at the various resorts in the Pocono Mountains. Opportunities are available for long weekend trips further into the northeast. The destinations we select offer a challenge for any level ski/snowboarder: from green to black diamond.

     


    Cross Country Skiing @ Jim ThorpeFebruary 17th – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $75 Pottruck Member / $85 Non-Member

    We will explore the snow covered trails outside of the quaint little town of Jim Thorpe. Spend time getting comfortable on the cross country skis before hitting the mild trails that run through the lehigh gorge. No experience is necessary. Price includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment, and instruction.

    Downhill Skiing @ Blue Mountain

    February 25th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 2:00pm to 10:00pm

    Cost: $80 Pottruck Member / $80 Non-Member

    Join us for a night ski/snowboard as we head to Blue Mountain for some carving under the lights. Blue Mountain boasts the highest vertical and longest slopes in Pennsylvania with 39 trails for all ability levels. Price includes: Charter bus transportation and lift pass. **Tubing is not available for this trip.**

  • Extended Trips

    Take an Adventure for your academic break.  The Outdoor Adventure program offers a variety of adventures during Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter breaks.  Trips range from 4 to 7 days long and usually require extended travel time.  The extended trips visit some of most scenic outdoor locations regionally and nationally and may encompass several activity areas during one trip.  Interest and/or pre-trip meetings are typically required to participate in an extended trip.

    Cost: $500 Pottruck Member / $550 Non-Member

    Join Penn Outdoor Adventures for Spring Break as we explore the awe inspiring scenery and beauty of Zion National Park in Southern Utah. Spend 7 days camping under the stars within the park, Hiking the world renown Angels Landing and Zion Narrows, Backpack along the West Rim Trail into Zion Canyon, and spend a day exploring the hoodoo rock formations of nearby Bryce Canyon National Park. Price includes: Ground Transportation (van) from Las Vegas (NV) airport to Zion and back, Park entrance fees, All necessary backpacking, canyoneering and camping equipment, Camping fees, A portion of food, and Guiding & instruction.   • Wilderness First Aid Courses 

    If you spend any time in the outdoors, it is good to know what to do if things go wrong.  Our wilderness medicine courses are taught by professional instructors from the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS.  Choose from a 2-day (16 Hour) Wilderness First Aid Course or a 9-day (80 Hour) Wilderness First Responder Course.  These courses are great for everyone, whether you’re a weekend warrior or an outdoor professional.


    Wilderness First Aid Course

    March 24th & 25th

    Duration: 2 Days  – Saturday March 24th & Sunday, March 25th 9:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $250 for Penn Community / $275 General Public

    Whether spending time in the backcountry is your passion or your profession, you should never have to ask, “What do I do now?” In this fast-paced and hands-on course, you will learn how to prepare for the unexpected.

    The NOLS Wilderness Medicine Institute’s (WMI) curriculum includes many advanced topics that other programs leave out such as dislocation reduction and epinephrine administration. In just two days, you will have the knowledge, skills and ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations.

    This course is ideal for trip leaders, camp staff, outdoor enthusiasts and individuals in remote locations. WMI’s course is pre-approved by such organizations as the American Camping Association, the United States Forest Service, and other government agencies. This course does not* include CPR.

  • Cancellation & Refund Policies 

    Penn Campus Recreation reserves the right to cancel any Outdoor Adventure trip due to weather, safety issues, or low enrollment.  Participants will receive notice of cancellation at least 24 hours before the adventure is due to depart.  In the event of a Penn Recreation cancellation, participants will receive a full refund of any fees paid.

    Day Trips

    If a participant withdraws from a day trip prior to 48 hours of the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  No refunds will be given if participant withdraws within 48 hours of the trip departure.

    Weekend Trips (2-3 days)

    If a participant withdraws from a weekend trip prior to 7 days before the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  A 50% refund of any fees paid will be given if withdraw occurs within 7-2 days prior to the trip departure.  No refunds will be given if withdraw occurs within 48 hours of the trip departure.

    Extended Trips (Longer than 3 days)

    If a participant withdraws from an extended trip prior to 14 days before the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  A 50% refund of any fees paid will be given if withdraw occurs within 14-7 days prior to the trip departure.  No refunds will be given if withdraw occurs within 7 days of trip departure.
