Outdoor Adventure Trips

Trips will run in all weather conditions with the exception of dangerous conditions. Ending times of trips are approximated for your convenience, but please expect that times may vary due to traffic or unexpected delays. All trips will promptly begin at the climbing wall at the Pottruck Health & Fitness Center. Remember that wilderness trips take place away from modern amenities such as bathrooms, heaters, and grocery stores. Please plan accordingly.

  • Outdoor Climbing 

    IMG_2155Whether you have never climbed before or you are an avid climber just looking to get outside, our outdoor climbing courses are for you.  We will be visiting some of the Philly areas best  local climbing destinations.  No experience is required and all necessary equipment is provided.  All courses are taught by an American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Instructor.


    Ice Climbing – Catskill Mountains

    February 3rd-Friday to February 4th – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 2 Days 5:00pm on Friday 2/3 to 10:00pm on Saturday 2/4

    Cost: $250 Pottruck Member / $275 Non-Member

    Picture yourself climbing on frozen waterfalls on this one of a kind adventure. If you like climbing and you don’t mind the cold, then you will love ice climbing. Ice climbing utilizes technical equipment to ascend frozen waterfalls. Highly trained guides will provide professional instruction to help you get up the ice regardless of your ability level.  Spend a winter day ice climbing in the beautiful Catskill mountains. This is an overnight trip, with a 1-night hotel stay on Friday followed by a full day of ice climbing on Saturday with Alpine Endeavors, a professional guide service accredited by the American Mountain Guides Association. All technical equipment will be provided, including: Boots, Harness, Helmet, Ice Tools and Crampons.

    Rock Climbing – Safe Harbor

    March 26th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member / $60 Non-Member

    Located along the banks of the Susquehanna River, the cliffs of Safe Harbor offer great climbing for all abilities. This man-made crag gives climbers an introduction into slab climbing, which rewards those with good footwork and balance. Safe Harbor’s riverside location often stays warm when the weather turns cool and is a great place to spot bald eagles. Price includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment and instruction.

    Rock Climbing – Ralph Stover

    April 22nd – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member / $60 Non-Member

    Overlooking Tohickon Creek is the “High Rocks” portion of Ralph Stover State Park. Challenge yourself on the cliffs that reach 80ft in height. Climbers of all abilities can enjoy this local gem. Price includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment and instruction.

    Take a break during “Reading Days” and hang out with Penn Outdoor Adventures on a great rock climbing trip. Overlooking Tohickon Creek is the “High Rocks” portion of Ralph Stover State Park.   • Hiking and Backpacking

    IMG_2177Day hikes stroll down lazy hills, along rivers, lakes, and swamps, scale steep ridges to gain gorgeous views of the valley below. Multi-day backpacking trips are designed to develop self-reliance in the participants; to keep you out of the school of hard knocks. Trips run on a wide range of trails including Appalachian Mountain trails.


    Day Hike – French Creek 

    March 25th – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $35 Pottruck Member / $45 Non-Member

    Get out of the city and into nature with a leisurely day hike. Day hikes explore the trails, streams, lakes and other natural wonders within a 2-hour drive of Philly. Typical hikes cover 5-8 miles of trails. No experience is required. Transportation, instruction and guiding are provided.

    Full Moon Night Hike

    April 10th – Monday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 6:00pm to 10:00pm

    Cost: $25 Pottruck Member / $35 Non-Member

    Come howl at the moon as we explore the beauty of hiking at night.  The full moon night hike will visit local hiking destinations and offer spectacular views of the night sky.  No experience is necessary and headlamps are provided.

  • Paddle Sports 

    IMG_2210Take your adventure off shore with our water-based paddle sports.  Join us for a variety of paddle sports, whether you prefer Stand Up Paddleboarding at the beach, canoeing or kayaking down a lazy stream, or challenging the rapids on a whitewater rafting trip, we have something for everyone.  Participants must be able to swim in order to register.

     


    Pack Rafting – Delaware River

    April 23rd – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day   8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member/ $60 Non-Member

    Enjoy paddling along the Pennsylvania/New Jersey border, down the Delaware River, through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The Delaware Water Gap is a beautiful section of river with spectacular sites and wildlife viewing opportunities. Price Includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment, and instruction.

    Pack Rafting – Skuylkill River

    April 27th – Thursday (Reading Days)

    Trip Duration: 1 Day   9:00am to 4:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member/ $60 Non-Member

    Take a break during Reading Days and join us as we explore our local urban water way. We will be throwing our Pack Rafts in our backpacks and taking the SEPTA regional rail upstream to get on the river. After a casual paddle back to center city, we will take-out at boat house row and walk back to campus. Price includes: Regional rail ticket, all necessary equipment and instruction.

  • Biking

    Choose pedal power for your next adventure with one of our biking trips.  We offer a variety of biking, from leisurely touring to hopping over roots and rocks on the trails with a mountain bike.  Biking is a great way to cover a lot of distance and see more in a short amount of time.  We rent bicycles from the destinations that we travel to.  Sorry, but you can’t bring your own trustee bike, as we do not have a way to transport it.

  • Snow Sports

    PennRec StaffWhether you’re learning the slopes, or are a seasoned veteran, join us for a wintry experience on our Downhill Ski/Snowboard trips. Local trips ski at the various resorts in the Pocono Mountains. Opportunities are available for long weekend trips further into the northeast. The destinations we select offer a challenge for any level ski/snowboarder: from green to black diamond.

     


    Winter Break Vermont Ski/Snowboard Trip

    January 3rd – Tuesday to January 6th – Friday

    Trip Duration: 4 Days

    Cost: $375 Pottruck Member / $425 Non-Member

    Hit the slopes over winter break as we visit one of the best ski and snowboard mountains in the Northeast. We will be headed to Killington Resort in the beautiful mountains of Vermont. This trip is suited for all abilities, whether it is your first time or you have been shreddin for years. Bring your own gear or rent from the mountain. Lessons are also available for beginners from professional instructors at Killington. Price includes: Transportation, 3-nights Hotel stay, and a 2-Day Lift Ticket. Additional costs for ski/snowboard rentals and lessons. Registration ends December 19th.

    Downhill Skiing/Snowboarding – Big Boulder Resort

    January 29th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day   8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member & Non-Member (Additional costs for rentals & lessons)

    Hit the slopes as we head to the Pocono mountains for a day of skiing/snowboarding. Big Boulder resort offers great views of the surrounding Pocono mountains and offers 16 trails of varying difficulty, including terrain parks and tubing area. No experience necessary.  Price includes: Charter bus transportation and lift ticket. Additional costs for equipment rentals and lessons.

    Enjoy this winter snowshoe hike through Hickory Run State Park in the beautiful Pocono mountains. Hike along frozen streams and through trails lined with giant rhodedendrons. Price includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment, and instruction.

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Join us as we slide on some snow through the trails of Hickory Run State Park. This trip will spend quality instructional time getting participants comfortable on cross country skis before hitting the wooded trails of the park. Price includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment, and instruction.

    Join us at the mountain top resort of Jack Frost for a day of skiing/snowboarding. Jack Frost provides 20 trails of varying difficulty, a terrain park, and tubing area. Price include: Charter bus transportation and lift ticket.

    Just outside of the Philly suburbs lies French Creek State Park. Hike the wooded trails that the famous frontiersman, Daniel Boone, once roamed growing-up. Enjoy with streams, woods, and lakes that make up the landscape of the state park. Price Includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment, and instruction

    Cross Country Skiing – Jim Thorpe

    February 19th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $75 Pottruck Member / $85 Non-Member

    We will explore the snow covered trails outside of the quaint little town of Jim Thorpe. Spend time getting comfortable on the cross country skis before hitting the mild trails that run through the lehigh gorge. No experience is necessary. Price includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment, and instruction.

    Downhill Skiing/Snowboarding – Blue Mountain Resort

    February 126h – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day   2:00pm to 11:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member & Non-Member (Additional costs for rentals & lessons)

    Join us for a night ski/snowboard as we head to Blue Mountain for some carving under the lights. Blue Mountain boasts the highest vertical and longest slopes in Pennsylvania with 39 trails for all ability levels. Price includes: Charter bus transportation and lift pass.

  • Extended Trips

    Take an Adventure for your academic break.  The Outdoor Adventure program offers a variety of adventures during Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter breaks.  Trips range from 4 to 7 days long and usually require extended travel time.  The extended trips visit some of most scenic outdoor locations regionally and nationally and may encompass several activity areas during one trip.  Interest and/or pre-trip meetings are typically required to participate in an extended trip.

  • Wilderness First Aid Courses 

    If you spend any time in the outdoors, it is good to know what to do if things go wrong.  Our wilderness medicine courses are taught by professional instructors from the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS.  Choose from a 2-day (16 Hour) Wilderness First Aid Course or a 9-day (80 Hour) Wilderness First Responder Course.  These courses are great for everyone, whether you’re a weekend warrior or an outdoor professional.


    Wilderness First Aid 

    March 18th & 19th

    Course Duration: 2 Days 8:00am-6:00pm on Saturday 3/18 & 8:00am-6:00pm on Sunday 3/19

    Cost: $225 Penn Students, Faculty & Staff / $250 Public

    Whether spending time in the backcountry is your passion or your profession, you should never have to ask, “What do I do now?” In this fast-paced and hands-on course, you will learn how to prepare for the unexpected. The NOLS Wilderness Medicine Institute’s (WMI) curriculum includes many advanced topics that other programs leave out such as dislocation reduction and epinephrine administration. In just two days, you will have the knowledge, skills and ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations. This course is ideal for trip leaders, camp staff, outdoor enthusiasts and individuals in remote locations. WMI’s course is pre-approved by such organizations as the American Camping Association, the United States Forest Service, and other government agencies. This course does not* include CPR.

    Trip Logistics

    • All participants will receive a pre-course email.
    • Cancellation & Refund Policies 

      Penn Campus Recreation reserves the right to cancel any Outdoor Adventure trip due to weather, safety issues, or low enrollment.  Participants will receive notice of cancellation at least 24 hours before the adventure is due to depart.  In the event of a Penn Recreation cancellation, participants will receive a full refund of any fees paid.

      Day Trips

      If a participant withdraws from a day trip prior to 48 hours of the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  No refunds will be given if participant withdraws within 48 hours of the trip departure.

      Weekend Trips (2-3 days)

      If a participant withdraws from a weekend trip prior to 7 days before the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  A 50% refund of any fees paid will be given if withdraw occurs within 7-2 days prior to the trip departure.  No refunds will be given if withdraw occurs within 48 hours of the trip departure.

      Extended Trips (Longer than 3 days)

      If a participant withdraws from an extended trip prior to 14 days before the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  A 50% refund of any fees paid will be given if withdraw occurs within 14-7 days prior to the trip departure.  No refunds will be given if withdraw occurs within 7 days of trip departure.
