Outdoor Adventure Trips

Get out of the city and into nature with one of our Outdoor Adventures!  Studies have shown that spending time in the outdoors has significant physical health benefits, helps reduce stress, decreases anxiety, increases self-confidence and sharpens one’s focus.  Our trips are suited for all ability levels and are led by trained staff.  Transportation and all necessary equipment is provided for all trips.

Penn Outdoor Adventure trips will run in all weather conditions with the exception of dangerous conditions. Ending times of trips are approximated for your convenience, but please expect that times may vary due to traffic or unexpected delays. All trips will promptly begin at the climbing wall at the Pottruck Health & Fitness Center. Remember that wilderness trips take place away from modern amenities such as bathrooms, heaters, and grocery stores. Please plan accordingly.

  • Outdoor Climbing 

    IMG_2155Whether you have never climbed before or you are an avid climber just looking to get outside, our outdoor climbing courses are for you.  We will be visiting some of the Philly areas best  local climbing destinations.  No experience is required and all necessary equipment is provided.  All courses are taught by an American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Instructor.


    Rock Climbing @ Ralph Stover

    September 17th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member / $60 Non-Member

    Overlooking Tohickon Creek is the “High Rocks” portion of Ralph Stover State Park. Challenge yourself on the cliffs that reach 80ft in height. Climbers of all abilities can enjoy this local gem. Price includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment and instruction.

    November 5th – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member / $60 Non-Member

    Located along the banks of the Susquehanna River, the cliffs of Safe Harbor offer great climbing for all abilities. This man-made crag gives climbers an introduction into slab climbing, which rewards those with good footwork and balance. Safe Harbor’s riverside location often stays warm when the weather turns cool and is a great place to spot bald eagles. Price includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment and instruction.

  • Hiking and Backpacking

    IMG_2177Day hikes stroll down lazy hills, along rivers, lakes, and swamps, scale steep ridges to gain gorgeous views of the valley below. Multi-day backpacking trips are designed to develop self-reliance in the participants; to keep you out of the school of hard knocks. Trips run on a wide range of trails including Appalachian Mountain trails.


    Backpacking The John P. Saylor Trail

    September 22ndFriday to September 24th-Sunday

    Trip Duration: 3 Days – Friday, September 22nd: 5:00pm to September 24th: 6:00pm

    Cost: $100 Pottruck Member / $125 Non-Member

    Join us as we spend the weekend backpacking one of the best beginner backpacking trails in Pennsylvania. The trip will consit of 3 days and 2 nights on the John P. Saylor Trail in Central Pennsylvania. The trail has easy to moderate terrain and passes through several forests types as well as a bog, wolf rocks and several suspension bridge stream crossings. No experience is required. Transportation, all necessary equipment, instruction, and guiding are included. There is a mandatory pre-trip meeting on Monday. September 18th for all those registered.

    Day Hike to Hawk Mountain

    October 1st – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $35 Pottruck Member / $45 Non-Member

    Fall is a great time of year for hiking and bird watching. This trip combines both in one great location. We will be hiking on the property of the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, which offers great hiking with beautiful views and several locations to watch the Fall raptor migration. We will start the hike at the Hawk Mountain visitors center with a chance to see some birds of prey up close and personal before going on our hike. We will hike to one of the prominent over looks on Hawk Mountain that offers expansive views of the valley below and presents opportunities to see several species of raptors fly directly over head while they are migrating through the area. This trip is suited for hikers of all abilities.

    Full Moon Night Hike to Ft. Washington

    October 1st – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 7:00pm to 11:00pm

    Cost: $25 Pottruck Member / $35 Non-Member

    Come howl at the moon as we explore the beauty of hiking at night. The full moon night hike will visit local hiking destinations and offer spectacular views of the night sky. No experience is necessary and headlamps are provided.

    Day Hike to the Pinnacle

    October 14th – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $35 Pottruck Member / $45 Non-Member

    Hike to one of the best views of Eastern Pennsylvania! This day hike will visit the Pinnacle Rock overlook along the Appalachian trail. The hike will be long and can be steep, rocky and challenging at times, but the views from the top are well worth it. No experience is necessary. Transportation, guiding and instruction is provided.

    Day Hike to Ridley Creek

    October 22nd – Sunday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day 9:00am to 5:00pm

    Cost: $35 Pottruck Member / $45 Non-Member

    Explore Ridley Creek State Park as we take a leisurely hike through a colonial plantation, along shimmering Ridley Creek and past the ruins of an 18th century farmhouse. No experience is necessary. Transportation, guiding and instruction is provided.

    Backpacking the Old Loggers Path

    October 27th-Friday to October 29th-Sunday

    Trip Duration: 3 Days – Friday, October 27th: 5:00pm to Sunday, October 29thth: 6:00pm

    Cost: $100 Pottruck Member / $125 Non-Member

    October is the best time to backpack in the Pennsylvania mountains. Spend the weekend following the relics of the logging industry as we hike the Old Loggers Path during this 3-day, two night trip. This trail passes through various forest types, scenic overlooks, the beautiful rock run natural area and even a ghost town. Perfect for Halloween weekend! No experience is required. Transportation, all necessary equipment, instruction, and guiding are included. There is a mandatory pre-trip meeting on Monday October 23rd for all those registered.

    Celebrate Veteran’s Day with a hike through Valley Forge National Battlefield. Our hike will travel through the woodlands surrounding the park going over Mt. Joy and Mt. Misery. We will also be stopping at the headquarters of George Washington for a short historical break. No experience is necessary. Transportation, guiding and instruction is provided.

  • Paddle Sports 

    IMG_2210Take your adventure off shore with our water-based paddle sports.  Join us for a variety of paddle sports, whether you prefer Stand Up Paddleboarding at the beach, canoeing or kayaking down a lazy stream, or challenging the rapids on a whitewater rafting trip, we have something for everyone.  Participants must be able to swim in order to register.

     


    Pack Rafting the Delaware River

    September 16th – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day   8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $50 Pottruck Member/ $60 Non-Member

    Enjoy paddling along the Pennsylvania/New Jersey border, down the Delaware River, through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The Delaware Water Gap is a beautiful section of river with spectacular sites and wildlife viewing opportunities. Pack Rafts are compact 1-person inflatable rafts, similar to paddling a traditional kayak. However, Pack Rafts are extremely versatile and, when deflated, can pack into a backpack to enable you to explore remote water ways that is hard carry a traditional boat to. Join us as we test out our new fleet of Pack Rafts, which are unique to an East coast urban university program.  Price Includes: Transportation, all necessary equipment, and instruction.

    Fall Break Assateague Island Backcountry Adventure
    October 5th-Thursday to October 8th-Sunday

    Trip Duration: 4 Days – Thursday, October 5th: 8:00am to Sunday, October 8th: 6:00pm

    Cost: $275 Pottruck Member / $300 Non-Member

    Spend Fall Break on the coast with us as we travel to Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland. Assateague is a barrier island with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and a large bay on the other. Assateague may be most noted for it’s population of wild horses that roams the island. Our trip will consist of 4 days and 3 nights in Assateague’s backcountry, which is only accessible by hiking or paddling. We will be using our 1-person inflatable Pack Rafts for 3 days of paddling on the bay side of the island and will spend 1 day hiking along the beach with a night of ocean-side camping. The entire trip will take place away from modern amenities with no running water or electricity. We will be tent camping for all 3 nights during the trip. No experience required. Price includes: Transportation, All necessary equipment, National Park Access, 3 meals, Professional guiding and instruction.

  • Biking

    Choose pedal power for your next adventure with one of our biking trips.  We offer a variety of biking, from leisurely touring to hopping over roots and rocks on the trails with a mountain bike.  Biking is a great way to cover a lot of distance and see more in a short amount of time.  We rent bicycles from the destinations that we travel to.  Sorry, but you can’t bring your own trustee bike, as we do not have a way to transport it.

     


    Biking the Lehigh Gorge

    September 30th – Saturday

    Trip Duration: 1 Day   8:00am to 6:00pm

    Cost: $75 Pottruck Member/ $85 Non-Member

    Take a leisurely bike ride through one of the most beautiful places in Eastern Pennsylvania. We will be riding bicycles approximately 25 miles through the Lehigh Gorge in the Pocono Mountains. This bike ride travels along the Lehigh River on an abandoned rail road grade. The views will be spectacular as this will be the prime time to view the leaves in their fall foliage. No experience necessary.

  • Snow Sports

    PennRec StaffWhether you’re learning the slopes, or are a seasoned veteran, join us for a wintry experience on our Downhill Ski/Snowboard trips. Local trips ski at the various resorts in the Pocono Mountains. Opportunities are available for long weekend trips further into the northeast. The destinations we select offer a challenge for any level ski/snowboarder: from green to black diamond.

  • Extended Trips

    Take an Adventure for your academic break.  The Outdoor Adventure program offers a variety of adventures during Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter breaks.  Trips range from 4 to 7 days long and usually require extended travel time.  The extended trips visit some of most scenic outdoor locations regionally and nationally and may encompass several activity areas during one trip.  Interest and/or pre-trip meetings are typically required to participate in an extended trip.

  • Wilderness First Aid Courses 

    If you spend any time in the outdoors, it is good to know what to do if things go wrong.  Our wilderness medicine courses are taught by professional instructors from the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS.  Choose from a 2-day (16 Hour) Wilderness First Aid Course or a 9-day (80 Hour) Wilderness First Responder Course.  These courses are great for everyone, whether you’re a weekend warrior or an outdoor professional.

  • Cancellation & Refund Policies 

    Penn Campus Recreation reserves the right to cancel any Outdoor Adventure trip due to weather, safety issues, or low enrollment.  Participants will receive notice of cancellation at least 24 hours before the adventure is due to depart.  In the event of a Penn Recreation cancellation, participants will receive a full refund of any fees paid.

    Day Trips

    If a participant withdraws from a day trip prior to 48 hours of the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  No refunds will be given if participant withdraws within 48 hours of the trip departure.

    Weekend Trips (2-3 days)

    If a participant withdraws from a weekend trip prior to 7 days before the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  A 50% refund of any fees paid will be given if withdraw occurs within 7-2 days prior to the trip departure.  No refunds will be given if withdraw occurs within 48 hours of the trip departure.

    Extended Trips (Longer than 3 days)

    If a participant withdraws from an extended trip prior to 14 days before the trip departure, a full refund will be given of any fees paid.  A 50% refund of any fees paid will be given if withdraw occurs within 14-7 days prior to the trip departure.  No refunds will be given if withdraw occurs within 7 days of trip departure.
