Outdoor Adventure Trips

Trips will run in all weather conditions with the exception of dangerous conditions. Ending times of trips are approximated for your convenience, but please expect that times may vary due to traffic or unexpected delays. All trips will promptly begin at the climbing wall at the Pottruck Recreation Center. Remember that wilderness trips take place away from modern amenities such as bathrooms, heaters, and grocery stores. Please plan accordingly.

  • Outdoor Climbing 

    Intro to Outdoor Rock Climbing – TBD

    Experience climbing in natural settings at sites ranging from Bucks County, Pa to the “Gunks” located in New York. No experience is required. All technical equipment and transportation are provided. Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

  • Hiking and Backpacking

    Day hikes stroll down lazy hills, along rivers, lakes, and swamps, scale steep ridges to gain gorgeous views of the valley below. Multi-day backpacking trips are designed to develop self-reliance in the participants; to keep you out of the school of hard knocks. Trips run on a wide range of trails including Appalachian Mountain trails.

    Full Moon Night Hike – TBD

    Come howl at the moon as we explore the beauty of hiking at night. The full moon night hike will visit local hiking destinations and offer spectacular views of the night sky. No experience required and headlamps are provided. Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

    French Creek State Park Day Hike – TBD

    Get out of the city and take a hike in the largest block of continuous forest between Washington D.C. and New York City. French Creek State Park is located in the Schuylkill Highlands and boasts miles upon miles of hiking, a lake, and the opportunity for viewing wildlife. This trip is suited for hikers of all abilities. Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

  • Skiing

    Whether you’re learning the slopes, or are a seasoned veteran, join us for a wintry experience on our Downhill Ski/Snowboard trips. Local trips ski at the various resorts in the Pocono Mountains. Opportunities are available for long weekend trips further into the northeast. The destinations we select offer a challenge for any level ski/snowboarder: from green to black diamond.

    Downhill Skiing @ Jack Frost – January 25, 2015 8 AM to 7 PM

    Whether you’re learning to ski for the first time or a seasoned veteran, join us for a wintery experience at Jack Frost Resort in the Pocono Mountains.  Choose from skiing, snow boarding and/or tubing. Transportation included.  No experience necessary.     Cross Country Skiing @ Fairmount Park – February 7, 2015 8 AM to 6 PM

    X-country skiing is a great form of exercise and a great way to stay active during the winter. Our guides will show you all you need to know to master this great winter sport. You will learn the traditional kick & stride on groomed trials. No experience necessary and all equipment and transportation is provided. Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

Outdoor courses require physical exertion. You can prepare by 20 minutes of aerobic exercise twice a week at the Pottruck gym. Click here to download a list of what to bring. Visit Eligibility and Fees for more information on our membership options.

Cancellation Policy

A full refund will be provided for trips cancelled by the Department of Recreation due to weather. Refunds will not be granted to participants who cancel within 72 hours of course date. You must schedule a meeting with the Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation to receive a refund. We only refund half of the course costs.
