Outdoor Adventure Trips

Trips will run in all weather conditions with the exception of dangerous conditions. Ending times of trips are approximated for your convenience, but please expect that times may vary due to traffic or unexpected delays. All trips will promptly begin at the climbing wall at the Pottruck Recreation Center. Remember that wilderness trips take place away from modern amenities such as bathrooms, heaters, and grocery stores. Please plan accordingly.

Seasonal Offerings

  • Outdoor Climbing 

    Intro to Outdoor Rock Climbing – October 5, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

    Experience climbing in natural settings at sites ranging from Bucks County, Pa to the “Gunks” located in New York. No experience is required. All technical equipment and transportation are provided. Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

    Trip Logistics

  • Hiking and Backpacking

    Day hikes stroll down lazy hills, along rivers, lakes, and swamps, scale steep ridges to gain gorgeous views of the valley below. Multi-day backpacking trips are designed to develop self-reliance in the participants; to keep you out of the school of hard knocks. Trips run on a wide range of trails including Appalachian Mountain trails.

    Full Moon Night Hike – October 7, 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM

    Come howl at the moon as we explore the beauty of hiking at night. The full moon night hike will visit local hiking destinations and offer spectacular views of the night sky. No experience required and headlamps are provided. Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

    Backpacking the West Rim Trail – Fall Break Trip – October 9 to 12, departs 8:00 AM

    Spend Fall Break exploring Penn’s Woods. This 4 day 3 night backpacking trip is suited for any level of backpacker. We will be hiking the 30 mile West Rim Trail located in beautiful North Central PA. The trail follows along the rim of Pennsylvania’s “Grand Canyon” offering spectacular views and traveling through a variety of different forest types. No experience required. All equipment and several meals are included in the cost. A mandatory pre-trip meeting will be held on October 6. Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

    Hawk Mountain Day Hike – October 5, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM

    If you’re interested in awe-inspiring views, fresh air, and experiencing raptor migration up close, then this hike is for you. We will be hiking an 8 mile loop on the property of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. The hike will include varied terrain along the river of rocks and climbing up to the Kittatinny Ridge, which provides spectacular views and the possibility of seeing a bald eagle or peregrine falcon.     French Creek State Park Day Hike – October 25, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM

    Get out of the city and take a hike in the largest block of continuous forest between Washington D.C. and New York City. French Creek State Park is located in the Schuylkill Highlands and boasts miles upon miles of hiking, a lake, and the opportunity for viewing wildlife. This trip is suited for hikers of all abilities. Registration is available online and in Membership Services.

  • Skiing

    Whether you’re learning the slopes, or are a seasoned veteran, join us for a wintry experience on our Downhill Ski/Snowboard trips. Local trips ski at the various resorts in the Pocono Mountains. Opportunities are available for long weekend trips further into the northeast. The destinations we select offer a challenge for any level ski/snowboarder: from green to black diamond.

    Trip registration is not available at this time.

Preparation

Outdoor courses require physical exertion. You can prepare by 20 minutes of aerobic exercise twice a week at the Pottruck gym. Click here to download a list of what to bring. Visit Eligibility and Fees for more information on our membership options.

Cancellation Policy

A full refund will be provided for trips cancelled by the Department of Recreation due to weather. Refunds will not be granted to participants who cancel within 72 hours of course date. You must schedule a meeting with the Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation to receive a refund. We only refund half of the course costs.
