Outdoor Climbing (April – October)

Experience climbing in natural settings at sites ranging from Bucks County, Pa to the “Gunks” located in New York. We offer a variety of courses including introductory single day classes to multi-day ventures focusing on leading, anchoring, and multi-pitch skills.  All technical equipment and transportation are provided.

Hiking and Backpacking (April – November)

Apalachian Trail

Day hikes stroll down lazy hills, along rivers, lakes, and swamps, scale steep ridges to gain gorgeous views of the valley below.  Multi-day backpacking trips are designed to develop self-reliance in the participants; to keep you out of the school of hard knocks. Trips run on a wide range of trails including Appalachian Mountain trails.

Skiing (January – March)

Whether you’re learning the slopes, or are a seasoned veteran, join us for a wintry experience on our Downhill Ski/Snowboard trips.  Local trips ski at the various resorts in the Pocono Mountains.  Opportunities are available for long weekend trips further into the northeast. The destinations we select offer a challenge for any level ski/snowboarder: from green to black diamond.

Trip Details

Trips will run in all weather conditions with the exception of dangerous conditions. Ending times of trips are approximated for your convenience, but please expect that times may vary due to traffic or unexpected delays. All trips will promptly begin at the climbing wall at the Pottruck Recreation Center. Remember that wilderness trips take place away from modern amenities such as bathrooms, heaters, and grocery stores. Please plan accordingly.

Cancellation Policy

A full refund will be provided for trips cancelled by the Department of Recreation due to weather. Refunds will not be granted to participants who cancel within 72 hours of course date. You must schedule a meeting with the Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation to receive a refund. We only refund half of the course costs.   


Exertion Levels

Each outdoor activity has been rated with a number to describe the physical fitness recommended to participate in the course.  The rating is described after the title of each course with the corresponding number of difficulty highlighted in bold.  That number denotes the minimum level of exertion for the trip however most trips provide options for participants to challenge themselves further.  This rating system is in place not to scare off participants, but to allow you to make educated decisions as to what courses you sign up for, and as to what to expect before leaving for an outing.
  1. Easy Going: a walk in the park.
  2. Moderate: Activities may include hiking up to 6 miles and 2-4 hours of activity
  3. Active:  Activities may include hiking up to 10 miles, 4-6 hours of activity, or multiple days of activity.  Mountainous terrain with steep sections.
  4. Challenging: Vigorous activity for 4-8 hours a day requiring basic technical skills with steep mountainous terrain.
  5. Strenuous: Designed for very fit mountain athletes wanting to travel on exposed steep terrain in remote areas for long hours over multiple days. 


Outdoor courses require physical exertion. You can prepare by 20 minutes of aerobic exercise twice a week at the Pottruck gym. Don’t worry; the best preparation is a positive and adventurous attitude.
