Tae Kwon Do
The University of Pennsylvania's WTF Tae Kwon Do club was founded in 1989 by a group of black belts who wanted to bring the Korean Martial Art of Tae Kwon Do to Penn's campus. Tae Kwon Do means "the way of fist and foot." The club offers quality instruction at both the beginner and advanced level, focusing on kicking and punching techniques, physical fitness, and self-defense. The club follows the Tae Kwon Do curriculum set and governed by the World Tae Kwon Do Federation.
The club is also a member of the Ivy/ NorthEast Collegiate Tae Kwon Do League, an officially recognized league by the National collegiate Tae Kwon Do Association. The league includes various schools along the Northeast, including Cornell, Columbia, Princeton, Yale, NYU, Rutgers, UBuffalo, Johns Hopkins, and Brown. The club features a team component, competing at intercollegiate tournaments at New York University, Cornell University, Princeton University, Columbia University, and Yale University. The team also sends competitors to state and national championship tournaments. Competition takes place in two categories, gyroogi and poomse (sparring and forms).
