A course is set up at the Inventory level to contain all of its possible activities (lec, lab, rec, etc). At the term level, each activity must be set up as a separate section of the course.

These are the RULES when establishing course sections for multi-activity courses:

  • One course section can have only ONE activity type.
  • A course with more than one activity type must have more than one section.
  • A course must exist on the Inventory with all of its activity types before you may create sections for it.

THE GENERAL RULE IS THAT ONLY THE FIRST ACTIVITY LISTED FOR THE COURSE ON THE INVENTORY SCREEN CARRIES THE CREDIT FOR THE COURSE AND IS GRADED.

When you are creating sections for other than the first activity type listed on the Inventory:

  • The title of that section will become the type of activity.
  • CREDIT OFFERED remains blank.
  • Section control is "R" - only class lists are produced.
  • SPECIAL GRADE is "NG" - not graded.

IMPORTANT: You must type in the appropriate activity type in the ACTIVITIES field BEFORE pressing Enter to add a section to the Course Term File. If you press Enter before filling in an activity type, the system will default to the first activity that is defined in the Inventory. You will then have to delete that section and recreate it with the appropriate activity type.

-

Establish the context line by entering the COURSE and the TERM on Screen 129.

-

Press Enter.

You should receive the message - "COURSE NOT ON COURSE TERM FILE".

-

Tab to FUNCTION field, type A for add. DO NOT ENTER.

-

Tab to the ACTIVITY field and type the activity for that section.

-

Press Enter.

After the course has been added it is possible to override the default values for: credit offered, special grade; section control; and section title, if needed.
