Engaging Alumni in Asia

On the heels of a successful, seven-year fundraising campaign, University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann visited Hong Kong in May to host a Penn alumni event on May 21 for alumni from throughout Asia.

More than 250 Penn alumni and friends attended the event. Approximately 15,000 Penn alumni currently live in Asia, with high concentrations in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Beijing, and Shanghai. More than 60 percent of Penn’s international students are from Asia. Hong Kong was the first of nine stops for the Time to Shine world tour.

From Hong Kong, President Gutmann traveled to Tokyo to meet with Wharton alumni and friends at the Wharton Global Forum, presenting a keynote address to the group titled “Maximizing Returns: The Enduring Value and Bold Future of Higher Education.” She addressed the value of higher education and spoke of Penn’s recent entry into the world of massive open online courses, called MOOCs, in her address.
