Penn: A Year In Pictures 2011-2012
From Convocation to Commencement. From the opening of Penn Park to the $225 million Perelman gift, the largest in the University’s history. From the Glee Club’s 150th anniversary to a visit from Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor to dedicate Penn’s newest Law School building. This was a year of tradition and transformation at Penn.
The Penn community welcomed distinguished guests, such as Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., First Lady Michelle Obama, authors Toni Morrison and John Barth, Peggy Noonan, Alan Simpson, Edward G. Rendell and Michael Nutter, among many others.
In basketball, senior guard Zack Rosen was a unanimous selection as Ivy League Player of the Year and first-team All-Ivy. Penn’s gymnastics team captured the ECAC Championship. Tradition continued at the 118th running of the Penn Relays.
Penn researchers were also superstars. Penn Vet Professor Ralph Brinster was awarded the National Medal of Science, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on scientists and engineers. And Penn Engineering’s Vijay Kumar wowed audiences across the world with amazing flying robots.
At Commencement, Penn President Amy Gutmann called the 2012 graduates an exceptional class that “does nothing by half measures.” And keynote speaker Geoffrey Canada, founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, encouraged them to use their talents to battle poverty and violence.
