Announcing the Penn Managed Print Services (MPS) Program

October 24, 2013

Members of the Penn Community seeking to significantly reduce their office printing costs can now take advantage of Penn’s new Managed Print Services (MPS) Program. The MPS Program provides participants access to the latest print technologies, high quality printer maintenance services, supplies, and the best overall office printing value on campus.

Purchasing Services launched a pilot of the program earlier this year in three Schools and two Departments:

·School of Veterinary Medicine

·School of Dental Medicine

·Annenberg School for Communication

·University Lab Animal Resources

·Chemistry Department, School of Arts & Sciences

Prior to implementation, Penn’s MPS team carried out an extensive survey of printing habits and costs.  Across the pilot schools, a remarkable average of 1.5 printers per staff person was discovered, with a similar average of 1.5 local printers for every networked device. The total cost for the 600 printers identified was over $309,000 a year - an average of more than $500 per year, per print device. Penn currently has over 20,000 print devices on campus, so the aggregate cost is enormous.

For the pilot Schools and departments, phase one of the MPS implementation will yield significant savings of up to  $310,000, or an estimated 23% cost reduction — without removing any printers but by simply from shifting supplies/service from existing suppliers and right-sizing the existing printer fleet.

The 2014 Power Down Challenge resulted in a combined savings of over 35,000 kWh across campus –enough to power 3.3 homes’ electricity for one year.
