A Note on College Green

Marie Witt

As we approach the anniversary of Penn's Climate Action Plan, I have been invited to share how Business Services is "going green."

Last year we welcomed a new food service provider - Bon Appetit.  Among the many reasons we were excited about their arrival was that sustainability is a cornerstone of their operations. From increasing the percentage of local and sustainably raised food to events such as Low Carbon Diet Day, they are strong advocates for sustainable dining.  We also recently purchased four new propane fueled vans. They join a fleet already equipped to run on bio fuel and soon to be wrapped with colorful "green themed" graphics.  And beginning with the launch of the award winning Out on a Limb Tree Adventure last July to the opening of their horticultural center this May, the Morris Arboretum has also made major contributions to Penn's sustainability efforts. The new center is on target to be Penn's first Platinum LEED building.

This newsletter features our successful PennMOVES sale and the GCP website has information about green graduation gowns, writing instrument recycling, sustainable uniforms at the Inn at Penn and the green clothing line at the bookstore.  All examples of what has been accomplished this year. Yet, there is more to come. We plan to introduce green parking rates for low emission vehicles, expand composting and put recharging stations in some garages.  Like all of the Penn Community, we are committed to supporting Penn's Climate Action Plan goals and proud to be part of the Green Campus Partnership.

Leading The Green Maura Goldstein Maura Goldstein, C'11
Serving as the student population's (local) foodie, Maura enters her senior year at Penn as one of the most recognizable campus leaders in sustainability. She was among the first students to work for the Penn Green Campus Partnership, and has gone on to raise awareness of the importance of local food initiatives through several student groups, including PennGreen, FarmEcology, and the team behind the Penn Garden...
