The Department of Chemistry installed a 20-yard recycling compactor and a 6-yard trash compactor to facilitate the implementation of a department-wide lab glass and lab metal recycling program. The compactors have increased the department’s capacity to recycle paper, cardboard, and commingled materials while reducing the number of pickups from 10-12 to 2-3 per week.
The Department of Chemistry estimates a 50% increase in the amount of materials recycled with the purchase and installation of the recycling compactor. This increased capacity has allowed the Department to expand their existing office single-stream recycling program and provide all faculty, staff, and graduate student offices with recycling bins to encourage increased participation. Additionally, a lab glass disposal policy was instituted to improve capacity for collection and disposal of non-recyclable glass.
