About RecycleMania
WASTE REDUCTION AND RECYCLING AT PENN
While waste may not be the largest contributor to Penn’s carbon footprint, it is certainly the most visible. A 2008 waste audit revealed the potential to double the University’s diversion rate of traditional recyclables by adopting campus standards for signage, receptacle design, and collection protocols.

The Climate Action Plan calls on the University to reduce its overall waste stream and increase its diversion rate of paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, and metal recyclables to 40 percent by 2014. To make progress toward this goal and generate awareness about reducing waste and increasing recycling on campus, Penn will compete in the national RecycleMania competition for the fourth straight year.

RECYCLEMANIA
RecycleMania is an eight-week competition between more than 600 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Campuses compete in different contests to see which institution can achieve the highest recycling rate and collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, and the least amount of trash per capita.

The 2012 RecycleMania Tournament will run from February 5 to March 31. Scroll down to see results from last year's competition and learn more about what you can do to help Penn increase its recycling rate and reduce its waste in the 2012 tournament.

The 2012 RecycleMania Tournament
HOW IT WORKS
Participating colleges and universities report recycling and trash data on a weekly basis throughout the competition and are ranked within several categories. Penn will again compete in the three main RecycleMania competition categories:

Grand Champion -- highest overall recycling rate
Per Capita Classic -- highest amount of recyclables per person
Waste Minimization -- least amount of trash per person

RECYCLEMANIA 2011 RESULTS
In the 2011 RecycleMania Tournament, Penn recycled approximately 29 percent of its waste over the eight-week competition, placing second amongst its Ivy League peers in the Grand Champion category. Penn topped its Ivy League rivals in the Waste Minimization, generating only 58 pounds of trash per person over the eight-week period. Final Ivy League Grand Champion standings are displayed in the Standings section below.

WHERE WE STAND
Since July 2011, Penn has recycled approximately 30 percent of its paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, and metal waste and has established a goal of topping 32 percent for RecycleMania 2012. Scroll down to learn how you can help Penn reduce its waste and reach its 32 percent recycling goal!

WHAT'S ON DECK FOR RECYCLEMANIA 2012

Initiatives for RecycleMania 2012Back to Top

INITIATIVES CURRENTLY UNDERWAY

New and innovative recycling initiatives being launched across campus aim to make significant strides toward the University’s Climate Action Plan goal of a 40 percent diversion rate of glass, plastic, metal, paper, and cardboard by 2014.

  • The School of Engineering and Applied Science will expand its battery recycling and deskside recycling programs.
  • The School of Arts and Sciences will hold a deskside recycling pilot in one of its buildings.
  • The Perelman School of Medicine will offer hardcover book recycling in the Biomedical Research Building (BRB) lobby throughout the eight weeks of RecycleMania.
  • The Wharton School will complete a recycling pilot in five Huntsman Hall group study rooms.
  • Penn Business Services has launched a Green Team with representatives from the majority of the Division's units. The team will be focusing on initiatives surrounding RecycleMania, Earth Day and helping develop proposals for the Green Fund.
  • Penn Facilities & Real Estate Services will begin the second phase of its outdoor bin consolidation project, which will ensure that every outdoor trash can is accompanied by a recycling bin.

Has your office, building, or department started its own recycling initiative? Let us know at sustainability@upenn.edu and we'll add it to this list!

Combined with increased individual efforts from students, faculty, and staff across campus, these new departmental initiatives can contribute greatly towards Penn’s RecycleMania goal of a 32 percent cumulative recycling rate of glass, plastic, metal, paper, and cardboard over the eight-week competition. The campus’ monthly diversion rate of those materials currently stands at approximately 29 percent.

HOW YOUR OFFICE, LAB OR DEPARTMENT CAN GET INVOLVED

Improve recycling signage.

In need of some clear recycling signage for your office? Download recycling signs from our website and hang them in your office's designated waste collection areas.

Establish a central location for trash/recycling bins and eliminate personal trash bins.
Most, if not all of the waste you generate in your workplace is recyclable. Instead of risking these materials being disposed as trash in personal desk-side bins, choose central locations for trash and recycling bins to improve your office’s recycling rate.

Recycle pipette tip boxes in your lab.
Recycle pipette tip boxes in your lab. Pipette tip boxes that have a recycling mark with number 1 through 7, can go into any regular recycling bin.

Start recycling battery and portable electronic recycling.
Your office can use the Big Green Box program to recycle portable electronics and all batteries, including alkaline. The Big Green Box is shipped to your office pre-constructed. Place the box in a convenient location and start recycling your portable electronic and batteries. Once the box is full, drop it off at any FedEx shipping location to have the contents recycled. Shipping costs are included in the initial price of the box.

Designate a box in your office to recycle writing instruments.
Penn Now Recycles Pens! Purchasing Services has partnered with Sanford, Office Depot, and TerraCycle to collect and recycle writing instruments such as pens, pencils, markers, and highlighters. TerraCycle “up-cycles” the writing instruments into fun and innovative new products. All brands of pens and markers are acceptable. For every writing instrument that Penn recycles, the University will receive two cents ($0.02) which will be designated to the Green Fund. For more information on this program, or to volunteer to be a location coordinator to assist with collection process in your department or building, please contact JoAnn Murphy, Director of Purchasing.

Recycle all ink and toner cartridges.
Penn Purchasing Services works with Telrose Corporation and Office Depot to provide easy, convenient and green recycling programs for all of your used ink and toner cartridges. Rather than shipping the used ink or toner cartridges individually, Telrose Corporation is consolidating shipments for the entire University. Your Telrose Corporation delivery person will pick up used cartridges from your office, palletize them, and ship them in bulk to the recycler.

  • To request a pick-up of your used cartridges, simply send an email with your name, address and suite/office to Telrose Corporation Customer Service.
  • If you need a collection box for used ink and toner cartridges, simply send an email request to Telrose Corporation Customer Service and a box will be delivered to you free of charge.

Please direct all questions related to this program to Martin Hull at Telrose.

Consolidate your office supply orders and purchases.
When ordering products from the Penn Marketplace, consolidate your purchases to reduce the amount of packaging used for shipping. Buying in bulk can also help your office save money—Office Depot offers a 3% discount on orders over $200.

Install a Quench water filter.
Reduce the need for plastic bottles and bottled water by installing a Quench Water Filter. Purchasing Services has partnered with Quench USA to offer Inline Water Filter Systems to all departments. The Quench system uses UV filtration to purify and cool or heat municipal water. Please direct all questions regarding Quench inline water filtration systems to Debbie Gallagher at (484) 390-6217.

Start a junk mail collection bin.
Collect your office’s unwanted junk mail and designate a time to unsubscribe the names from future mailings by contacting the companies or departments responsible. Or use www.catalogchoice.org to unsubscribe from unwanted junk mail.

Share extra items with other Penn offices and departments.
List unneeded but usable items in Ben’s Attic, Penn’s newest way to reuse items.

Make Notepads from Excess Paper
If you happen to have a lot of single-sided documents, bring them to the Campus Copy Center and ask them to recycle your waste paper into notepads.

WASTE REDUCTION AND RECYCLING TIPS
recycle bin Report buildings without recycling bins:  The first step to increasing Penn’s recycling rate is ensuring that bins are available in each building on campus. If your building does not have recycling bins, email sustainability@upenn.edu and let us know.
recycling poster Learn what can and cannot be recycled at Penn:  Learn more about what Penn recycles on the Facilities and Real Estate Services website and visit the Green Campus Partnership Resources page to download posters for your building.
skinny trashcan Go beyond recycling – Reduce Your Waste:  People tend to become very enthusiastic about recycling paper, plastic, and metals, but often lose sight of the importance of reducing the amount of waste they generate. Be conscious of what you toss in the trash and think about what you could possibly reuse or recycle instead of throw away. Learn more about what Penn recycles on the Facilities and Real Estate Services website.
barcode Improve your purchasing practices: Avoid buying things you don't really need and items with short life spans. Consolidate your orders to reduce packaging and purchase products that you can reuse rather than throw away after a single use. Then complete the cycle by purchasing products made from recycled materials. Visit Purchasing Services' new Green Purchasing website to take advantage of discounts on green products for your office or department.
paper recyclables Reduce, reuse and recycle paper and cardboard:  Mixed paper and cardboard alone make up approximately 40% of Penn’s overall waste stream. Reduce the amount of paper you use by printing only when necessary, double-siding jobs, and reusing one-sided pages. Flatten and recycle all cardboard boxes, recycle old newspapers and magazines, and email sustainability@upenn.edu to arrange a hard cover book pickup.
reusable cups

Bring your own bottle and get your fill:  Many Penn departments and College Houses have installed UV tap water filters so you can refill without paying for bottled water. In addition, various campus retail locations will reward those who reduce their waste throughout RecycleMania by offering discounts for bringing your own mug, cup, or bottle to use.

e-waste Dispose of electronic and universal waste properly:  Penn recycles everything from old computers, electronics, and appliances, to compact fluorescent light bulbs and batteries. Visit the Green Campus Partnership website to learn when and where you can drop off your e-waste.
online bills Pay your bills online:  Virtually every company now offers paperless billing with email reminders, so you can start to chop down that stack of envelopes on your desk instead of trees used to make them.
PennMOVES Got junk? Donate it to PennMOVES at the end of the year:  Since 2007, Penn Business Services has conducted PennMOVES, a campus recycling and re-use drive during move-out. Items collected are re-sold during a two-day event in early June, with the proceeds benefitting West Philadelphia charity organizations identified by The United Way.
