"After the Fall: A World Transformed?" Q&A - the inaugural David and Lyn Silfen University Forum

<itunes:author>Amy Gutmann, Jennifer Amyx, Harold Cole, Don Kettl, Richard Marston, David Skeel, </itunes:author>

Does the current financial crisis, as George Soros recently argued, require a "new way of thinking about how markets work?" Or is the recent economic downturn an extraordinarily painful recession, but at its core nothing fundamentally more than a normal stage of an economic boom-to-bust cycle?

In the wake of investment firm and bank failures, stock market declines, and staggering job losses, governments around the globe have taken actions with major ramifications for the markets. The United States government has approved nearly $1 trillion in relief programs and bailouts to shore up the economy. In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced that his government will unveil a second bank bailout which builds on a previous 37 billion pound relief program.

Does the scale of the current economic contraction, along with the unprecedented decisions of governments to nationalize industries and make other direct investments in the private sector, herald a "new era" defined by fundamental, lasting, and as yet not fully understood changes in the world economy?

The Inaugural David and Lyn Silfen University Forum, hosted by Penn President Amy Gutmann, will brings together distinguished Penn faculty with expertise in business, economics, politics, law, and history to answer the question: Has our economic world fundamentally and permanently changed? And if so, what will the new world economic order look like? The panel members also explore the causes of the economic downturn and its short- and long- term impacts on the world in which we live.

Panel members include: Jennifer Amyx, Harold Cole, Don Kettl, Richard Marston, David Skeel.

<itunes:summary>Based on President Amy Gutmann's Penn Compact, Penn launched an initiative to recruit scholars whose research and teaching across disciplines foster more effective integration of knowledge and expertise across multiple professions and academic disciplines.

In keeping with the theme, on Friday, January 18, the Faculty Senate invited all members of the University of Pennsylvania community to celebrate Ben Franklin's 302nd Birthday at a Founder's Day Symposium.

Aristotle's Brain: Integrating Knowledge in the 21st Century will explore the prospects, realities, challenges, rewards, and obligations of interdisciplinary teaching, research, and education.

President Amy Gutmann moderated this provocative and unscripted conversation, with the four PIK (Penn Integrates Knowledge) Professors listed below. These eminent scholars have been recruited and hold joint appointments in two schools and departments bringing exceptional achievement across disciplines.

* John L. Jackson, Richard Perry University Associate Professor with joint appointments in Communication, Annenberg School of Communication and Anthropology, School of Arts and Sciences.

* Jonathan D. Moreno, David and Lyn Silfen University Professor with joint appointments in Medical Ethics, School of Medicine, and History and Sociology of Science, School of Arts and Sciences.

Opening address, featuring former U.S. President Bill Clinton, of the Kerner Plus 40 symposium, making the 40th anniversary of the landmark report that was issued by the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders. This report, which has come to be known as the "Kerner Commission Report," assessed the causes of the dozens of race riots that occurred in this country during the 1960s.

The Annenberg School for Communication and the Center for Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and the Institute for Advanced Journalism Studies (IFAJS) at North Carolina A&T State University undertook this symposium as a joint project to determine how this nation has responded to the Kerner Commission's recommendations. The symposium assembled teams of journalists and academics to conduct empirical research, investigative reporting, and hold roundtable discussions to determine what has happened in some of the cities hardest hit by race riots in the 1960s.

Kelly Writers House - Episode 09 - Jamaica Kincaid (audio only)

 <itunes:author>University of Pennsylvania</itunes:author>

Writer Jamaica Kincaid, visitor to the Kelly Writer House Fellows Program March 19-20, 2007.

Using life to inspire fiction, Jamaica Kincaid often explores the complexity of mother-daughter relationships, the effects and aftereffects of colonialism, and alienation more generally. Kincaid has recently edited "The Best American Travel Writing of 2005," published "Among Flowers: A Walk in the Himalayas" (2004) and "Mr. Potter" (2003) and is currently a visiting lecturer at Harvard University. Other works include "The Autobiography of My Mother" (1995), "Lucy" (1990) and "Annie John" (1985). She won the Prix Femina Etranger for her novel "My Brother" in 2000, a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1989, a PEN/Faulkner Award nomination and the Morton Dauwen Zabel Award of the American Academy and Institute of Arts for her first collection of short stories, "At the Bottom of the River" (1983). Kincaid was a New Yorker staff writer from 1976 until 1995 and has been publishing fiction and nonfiction since the mid-1970s. In addition to The New Yorker, her work has appeared in Ingenue magazine and The Village Voice. In 2004 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

In the New York Review of Books, Darryl Pinckney has written, "Kincaid's rhythms and the circularity of her thought patterns in language bring Gertrude Stein to mind. She is an eccentric and altogether impressive descendant."
