Barefoot Ballet
The Pennguinettes, Penn’s synchronized swimming team, have been kicking up their heels since 1946. The group was scheduled to perform in its 58th annual spring show at Sheer Pool on February 20, and its season will culminate in the Collegiate Nationals at the University of Florida, March 24-26. Photo by Candace diCarlo. The
three brass keys to the University (seen here floating through the rarified
air of the Lea Library) were presented to President Gutmann during last
months inauguration ceremony. The mace, Penns symbol of authority, was
carried by University Secretary Leslie Kruhly during the processional
to Irvine Auditorium. It is adorned with the seal and arms of the University,
the Penn and Franklin family coats of arms, an image of the Rittenhouse
orreryand a thistle. The presidents silver badgepresented to President
Gutmann by Trustee Chairman James Riepe W65 WG67depicts the orrery
seal on one side and the University seal on the other, and signifies the
authority of Penns chief executive. Which, with such powerful talismans,
should be considerable.
