Humanities Internships

University of Pennsylvania Press

The Internship Program at Penn Press is meant for undergraduate students and others seeking to explore the field of academic publishing. Running ten weeks, from June 1 to August 7, our summer program encompasses the entire publishing process, from manuscript proposal to bound book. Three Summer Interns will be selected, who will receive a stipend of $2,200 for working 20 hours a week at the Press for 10 weeks. Students from all academic backgrounds are invited to apply.

The internship is structured but not inflexible, and all Press departments are represented in the program: Acquisitions, Editing & Production (which includes design), Marketing, and Business & Administration. Each intern will be assigned to one or two departments depending on availability and the intern’s preference. Interns assigned to one Press department will spend the entire length of the program in that department, while those assigned to two will spend five weeks in each.

Interns will be expected to complete daily tasks as well as more in-depth projects under the guidance of Press staff members. Work experience will range from reading manuscripts to researching the prospective market for a book. Interns are invited to attend staff meetings, local conferences, and exhibits.

During the program, interns will also participate in seminars designed to offer a glimpse into the various aspects of publishing and address ways to attain an entry-level position in academic or trade publishing.
