Abstract Biosketch

  • How does medical informatics at the university differ from that of a commercial vendor?
  • Which informatics issues are best tackled by academic research and which are best addressed by vendors, large or small?
  • What are some of the pressing issues in US health care amenable to medical informatics solutions?


Donald W. Rucker, MD recently joined SMS as Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. Shared Medical Systems (SMS) is an HIS vendor with 1.2 billion dollars in sales for 1999 and was just acquired by Siemens, AG of Germany. Board certified in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine, he holds an MD from the University of Pennsylvania as well as an MBA and an MS in Medical Computer Science from Stanford. Dr. Rucker comes to SMS from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston where he served as attending in the Emergency Department and as a faculty member of Harvard Medical School. He was also a co-developer of the first Windows-based EMR and a principal at the Datamedic Corporation.
