
Provost Interdisciplinary Seminar Fund (PISF)

Guidelines:
Disciplines . The PISF fund supports seminars that stimulate the creation of interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations particularly those that support the Penn’s Compact‘s emphasis on the integration of knowledge. Seminars that include Penn graduate or undergraduate students will be particularly welcome as will seminars with participation from the non-academic community outside the University. Success is defined as growing attendance, publications, general visibility and other evidence of intellectual progress
Grant Term . 1year with the possibility for up to two additional years of funding. Funding in the second and third years is contingent on demonstration of success in the previous year(s). To receive continued funds in the second and third year, a report is due June 9, 2009.
Budget. Applications up to $10,000 will be considered. Funding for a second and third year is dependent on success of the first year. The budget may be dedicated to honoraria, travel, and other directly associated expenses, but entertainment should be kept to a minimum.
Eligibility. To be eligible for funding, seminars must draw on faculty scholars from at least two schools in the University. Applicants must be full time faculty members. Those who received awards last year are required to submit a new application and a report on your activities for FY2007 by June 9, 2008.
Instructions: Please include the following in this order in your application
- A cover page with the seminar series title, the names and affiliations of the principal faculty (no more than four faculty proposing the seminar)
- A brief (no more than two pages) description of the intellectual area of the seminar and of how the suggested new connections will advance the subject.
- On a separate sheet provide a suggested set of criteria or goals by which success of the seminar can be evaluated (not part of two page limit)
- On a separate page list the names, title and affiliation of others who will be major participants in the seminar (not part of two page limit)
- A detailed proposed budget for the first year of the seminar. The budget may be dedicated to honoraria, travel, and other directly associated expenses, but entertainment should be kept to a minimum. Also, co-funding from departments, schools or other sources should be documented and will increase the credibility of the application.
- Include a CV (2 page limit) for each of the principal faculty proposing the seminar
- Use one inch margins and 11pt or 12pt font, Times New Roman or Arial
Submission
Submission. Please send the application as follows:
- Email a single PDF file in the following order: signed coversheet, application, goals to measure success of seminar, names of major participants, budget, CV’s of principal faculty seminar proposers and letter of support if applicable to vpr@pobox.upenn.edu.
- The name of the PDF must be the name of the seminar series.
- Must be received on or before 5:00 pm on June 9th, 2008.
