Thieves of Baghdad: this presentation by U.S. Marine Colonel and New York assistant district attorney Matthew Bogdanos (above) is designed to separate myth from reality, and details the investigation into the theft and looting of the Iraq Museum in April 2003. Colonel Bogdanos tells the story—at the Penn Museum on March 4, at 2 p.m.—of the creation of the U.S. government’s first multi-agency task force ever deployed to a war zone (in the frozen hills of Afghanistan), and that team’s recovery more than one year later of over 5,000 of history’s most priceless antiquities. Exposing the flourishing black market in stolen antiquities, he addresses the future of international efforts to stop the smugglers. A book signing follows his talk (royalties fromThieves of Baghdad go to the Iraq Museum). This program is co-sponsored by Penn’s Center for Ancient Studies. $10 (includes Museum admission); free for Museum members. Reservations recommended. For information call (215) 898-4890.
