SEAS Teaching Awards
The 2005 SEAS Teaching Awards were presented late last month at the Annual Awards Recognition Dinner. Dr. Peter K. Davies, chair and professor of materials science and engineering, was awarded the School’s highest teaching honor, the S. Reid Warren, Jr. Award. The award is presented annually by the undergraduate student body and the Engineering Alumni Society in recognition of outstanding service in stimulating and guiding the intellectual and professional development of undergraduate students in SEAS. A student writes, “Dr. Davies teaches ‘Thermodynamics of Materials,’ with distinction. His comprehensive yet elegant explanations make what could be a frustrating and grating subject into a challenging exercise of the mind. He consistently challenges his students, and is flexible, personable and funny.”

Dr. Sampath Kannan, professor of computer and information science, was awarded the Ford Motor Company Award for Faculty Advising. The award recognizes dedication to helping students realize their educational, career and personal goals. In the words of a student, “Dr. Kannan has changed (the department). He has actively talked to students, student groups within CSE, and faculty, and listened to our opinions. The curriculum now has more depth. He has personally helped me in starting a club to retain women in computer science, and has been my advisor as well.”
